The Philip Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America attended the District IX FCCLA meeting on February 27th at the School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City.

Towns in District IX include Philip, Belle Fourche, Bison, Sturgis and Wall. The conference gave members the opportunity to compete in STAR events and develop leadership.

Skye Brucklacher, a Philip High School senior, has served as the district chairman for the past year and is also a state officer through having this position.

With just three weeks to go until the Philip Elementary Science Fair, it's time to pull out all stops to wrap up this year's research.

For students' convenience, the websites listed on the handouts explaining how to do a project, write the report, and set up a board, have been listed on the school's web page. All that is necessary is select the appropriate site and click.

As in the past, students will be setting up their projects in the Elementary Gym between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. on March 27th.

The Philip City Council held on Monday, March 3rd, was longer than usual to accommodate the full agenda.

Roger Williams asked if Lake Waggoner was receiving all that it could from the well system. With the extended drought in the region, there are very few fishing and boating places in western South Dakota. "We have a great place with a nice camping area, and no other place around to fish or boat," said Williams. He noted that the north boat ramp at the lake will not be usable much longer because of the lowering water level.

Insurance and highway department matters highlighted the Tuesday, March 3, 2008, Haakon County Commissioners meeting.

Brad Wilson, Sioux Falls, from the South Dakota Municipal League spoke with the commissioners regarding what his organization's workmen's compensation pool could do for Haakon County. He noted they are a member-owned nonprofit pool that provides workmen's compensation for cities, counties and special districts within South Dakota.

"The students were so worried that Carson has never really had a birthday before now," said Philip third grade instructor Karen Rembold. Carson Daly, son of Steve and Julie Daly of Midland, celebrated his first calendar birthday on February 29th. He is actually four years old.

He and three others, Roger Williams, Cheryl Hook and Gay Logan, visited the classroom to culminate the third grade studies of leap year.

While grasping the idea of an extra day every four years, the students studied the history of different calendars.
