The Scotties traveled to Lead on Monday, May 7, for the Mountain West Invitational Meet.

Philip had two athletes qualify for state in the boy's discus. Alex Moos took first place with a distance of 141 feet and five inches, while Casey Elshere took third with 140 feet even. Elshere also took first place in the 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 15.92 seconds.

"Overall, we did have some respectable performances," said head coach Jerry Rhodes. "Hopefully we are on target to have some peak performances by regional time.

The Philip Scottie golf teams competed in the Pre-Regional Golf Tournament at the Hart Ranch Golf Course near Rapid City on Monday, May 7.

Though the weather and course conditions were almost ideal, the competition among the 11 schools represented was harsh. The tournament is meant to show the competitors what practice they must do in preparation for the actual regional tournament on May 14.

In the boys division, Philip took fourth place as a team with a total score of 289. Individually, Caleb Clements shot a 91 to tie for sixth place. Jordan Smith earned 92 for ninth place.

The Range Judging team of the local Philip FFA Chapter competed in the 56th Annual National Range Judging Contest, held May 1 through 3 in Oklahoma City.

The team members were Katie Nelson, Mark Trask, Mick Trask and Troy Guptill.

"While in Oklahoma City, the team was able to tour the Braums Dairy, the Oklahoma City National Memorial, Lazy E Breeding Farm and Arena, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Hall of Fame," said advisor Doug Hauk, "as well as spending many long hours in the field practicing."

Dan and Gayla Piroutek were nominated as May's Citizens of the Month by Bill and Connie Parsons.

Dan is a native of the Milesville community and is a farmer, rancher and auctioneer. Gayla was raised in Artesian, SD, and moved to the Milesville area as a teacher. While teaching in the area, she met and married Dan. To this union two daughters were born, Erin and Amy.

Dan and Gayla are very active in the Milesville community. They are members of St.

Tom and Marie Radway were living in the country. It was getting more and more difficult for Marie to make the 25-mile one way commute to work everyday knowing that her husband, Tom, a quadriplegic, was alone and unable to maneuver freely inside most of the trailer house they called home. The Radways decided it was time to look for a place within the city limits and began to research their options. They contacted the First National Bank in Philip, SD, for assistance.
