Dowling was founded in 1907 by Michael P. Dowling, owner of the general merchandise store, land attorney and notary, who filed on a homestead near there. He was also the first postmaster. Dowling was located over 10 miles north of Ash Creek.

Farming was the number one industry in the Dowling community. Businesses throughout the years in the village included Chester Farnsworth, barber; Louis Kloster, blacksmith; Theo Kloster, well driller; German Lutherans Church (held at the Dowling School 1929-1933), Rev. E.J.

The Philip Lady Scotties took second place and the Scotties took first place at the Philip Invitational Track Meet held in Kadoka on Saturday, April 21.

Of the seven schools represented, the Philip boys' team earned 125 points, 20 over second place Bennett County. For the Philip boys, Jake Mathews earned first place in the triple jump with a distance of 37 feet and nine inches. Casey Elshere earned first place in the discus throw with a distance of 136 feet and two inches.

The girls' team claimed 127 points for second place, behind the Kadoka Lady Kougars.

The boys' and the girls' both took top team places, while Jordan Smith earned the top individual boys' honors and Tara Ravellette earned the top girls' medalist spot.

The players from the 11 schools had near perfect weather and course conditions. The sun was shining and the course was dry and ready for play.

Smith shot a 77 for first place. Philip's Caleb Clements ended the day with an 89 for fifth place.

Lois Shemek passed away, Thursday, April 19, 2007, at the Kadoka Nursing Home, from years of multiple health problems.

Lois was born in Ava, MO, in 1923. She spent most of her early years with her maternal grandparents who struggled to make a living in farming on the Missouri/Arkansas border. Of Native American heritage, she always recalled her grandparents as very loving and kind, while enduring a life of hardships. Lois married very young to Coy Mulanax of Springfield, MO, but the marriage was not to last long.

She married Russ Burmood around 1947.

James "Jim" Karl Knudtson, Rapid City, SD, passed away in his home Sunday, April 22, 2007, at the age of 64, after fighting a gallant battle with cancer. He was born February 15, 1943, in Watertown, SD, to Willard and Maxine (Higgins) Knudtson, the third of three children.

Jim was a proud graduate of Watertown High School, his senior year he was Chieftain of the Arrows football team. He went on to study at Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD. He met the love of his life, Helen Jeanne (Deanie) Yackley, in college and they were married on September 7, 1963.

It finally happened. I actually made a mistake. Actually, years ago, I thought that I had made an error, but I was mistaken.

Thank goodness everyone makes mistakes. The key to mistakes is the degree of importance they are and how you deal with them. It's all relative (and yes, some relatives are mistakes). A kindergartner with a pencil and an eraser saying "oops" is not the same as a brain surgeon or a Rabbi saying the same thing. Leaving your car lights on is not as bad as leaving the car out of gear on a hill.

Attorney General Larry Long is warning South Dakota hunting guides and outfitters of a credit card scam. The Consumer Protection Division has received complaints from two hunting outfitters that have been scammed out of money and several others who have received similar inquires.

South Dakota hunting guides and outfitters typically use their websites as a way to market their services, but this is where the scam begins. The business is contacted via email to reserve a hunting trip.

Local residents have the opportunity to further celebrate life by joining in the community blood drive from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, at the Fine Arts Building at the Philip High School. This blood drive is being sponsored by the Community Betterment Committee (the Birthday Gals).

Not only will people earn a good feeling after donating blood at the drive, but they will also be able to check their total cholesterol level. United Blood Services now offers free cholesterol testing to blood donors.

The Haakon Education Association (HEA), in conjunction with the Philip Alumni Association, is sponsoring a campaign titled "Philip Elementary Playground ... Be a Part of the Dream!"

"Our goal is to obtain new equipment for the elementary playground," said Jessica Wheeler, second grade instructor at Philip Elementary. "The school board has stated that if we can purchase the equipment, they will provide the required safety ground cover and the installation of the equipment.
