The Scotties traveled to Parkston to compete in a January 20th tournament.

Philip lost an excitingly close game against the New Underwood Tigers on Thursday, January 18. The Scotties started coming from behind in the second half, then held the Tigers in the fourth quarter, but not enough. The score at the buzzer was 48-49.

The Lady Scotties faced one of the top basketball teams in the state on Friday, January 19, when they went up against the Sully Buttes Chargers in Onida. The final score was 45-78 against the Scotties.

The town and surrounding community of Philip, SD, has a rich 100 years of trials and glories. Today, residents and visitors can see that continuing history in the individuals, organizations and businesses of the area.

With fewer than a thousand residents, Philip has the positive attributes of communities 10 times its size. Volunteerism is not a thing or a bewilderment; it is a way of life. The state-acclaimed Philip Volunteer Fire Department exists even without a taxable fire district.

The legislature is in full swing as we complete our second week. Several major issues have come up in the past week that I would like to share with you.

Personally, I did not agree with or vote for the cigarette tax. However, the people of South Dakota approved the measure in the November election. I am supporting legislation that would take the additional tobacco tax monies and return it to the taxpayers in three areas; education, property tax relief, and Medicaid funding.

The time was right. The Minuteman Missile sites had long been abandoned, except for one facility kept as a historical tourist stop. The legal ownership of anything left behind on non-public land was now in the hands of the ranchers and farmers who own and work that land.

Lobbying for federal funds is at the top of his list. In doing so, Kurle is on a first name basis with those important Congressional contacts in Washington, D.C. Always promoting the WR/LJ RWS and the needs of those who will be served, Kurle continuously faced numerous challenges.

When Jenn's medical costs reached her health insurance's $1 million maximum, she was partially covered by a state medical program for disabled children, but the program did not cover all of the family's expenses related to the illness or the transplant.

Teams of volunteers in Midland, Philip, Kadoka and New Underwood joined forces in late 2006 to raise funds that would have helped offset expenses for a double lung transplant for Jenn.

On December 4th, nine community members of Philip joined the facilitators' training seminar held in Rapid City. Those people were: Britni Ross, Mary Burnett, Terry Holman, Tom Radway, Jim Kanable, Kent Olson, Shirley Chin, Adele Gelvin and Del Bartels.

Facilitators will help the 30 or more community Study Circle volunteers to work together toward a goal.
