The Philip Scotties football team hosted the Jones County Coyotes on Friday, August 31. The game ended with a 52-20 win for the Scotties.

Philip received the first kick-off and ran the length of the field, but had to return due to a flag on the play.

With the clock at 7:55, the Scotties scored the first touchdown. The conversion attempt failed and the score was 6-0. Though Philip short-kicked and the Coyotes started on the 49, the Scotties soon regained possession.

The Lady Scotties volleyball team traveled to Kadoka to go up against the Kougars on Thursday, August 30. Philip's varsity team came back with a 3-0 sweeping win; 25-12, 25-16, 25-18. Philip now has a season record of 2-0.

Services for Brandon Morris, 21, of Buffalo, WY, who was killed in an auto accident Thursday morning, August 23, 2007, east of Buffalo were held Tuesday August 28, at the Big Horn Baptist Church with Pastor John Constantine officiating.

Brandon David Morris was born on September 13, 1985, in Buffalo to Bill and Stacy Morris. He grew up and went to school in Buffalo and attended Buffalo High School. After high school he took a job with Hanover Compressors in Casper where he met his future wife, Lacey Walker.

Margaret L. Durnill, age 93, of Philip, died Friday morning, August 24, 2007, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Services were held Monday, August 27, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford officiating.

Music was provided by Marilyn Millage, pianist, and the Haakon County Crooners, directed by Marlis Doud. Ushers were Don Haynes and Rod Seim. Pallbearers were Bill Buls, Martin Nelson, Tyrone and Harlan Moos, Chuck and Bill O'Connor.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery, Philip.

Henry K. Niedan, formerly of Midland, SD, died August 27, 2007 at Linden Court in North Platte, NE, at the age of 100.

Henry was the eldest son to German-Russian immigrant parents, Henry and Karoline (Rothenberger) Niedan, January 14, 1907, in the sod house on the Niedan homestead, 12 miles southeast of Midland, SD.

He was united in marriage on February 22, 1933, to Irene Mortensen at the parental Schultz home south of Philip, SD.

Valerie Emery, age 48, of Quanah, Texas, formerly of Wall, SD, died Monday, September 3, 2007, at her home in Quanah.

Valerie Lynn Brown was born April 17, 1959, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jack and Marlene (VanVleck) Brown. She was a resident of Quanah for twenty-five years.

Valerie was united in marriage to Tim Emery on August 17, 1990 in Quanah.

The family of Michael and Susan Nemec of Midland were honored on September 30 at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron for continuing to operate their family farm for over 100 years. South Dakota Century Farms is a recognition of families which have retained ownership of a South Dakota farm or ranch consisting of a minimum of 80 acres of the original farmland, for 100 years or more. The fourth annual Philip Chili Cook-off is set for Friday, September 21, at the football field before the high school football game.

Trophies will be awarded during the game's half-time to the winners in each of the four chili categories; hottest, most unique, best tasting and best overall.

Businesses, organizations and individuals are encouraged to enter to convince the community and judges that their chili is the best. Five judges will independently rate the entries, then as a group will determine the winners.

The South Dakota 4-H Hall of Fame inducted eight new members in 2007.
