Stanley and Loleta will have been Mr. and Mrs. Jacobson for 79 years on November 28th, 2007.

They both lived in the Nowlin area and, when both were 18-years-old, they traveled to Fort Pierre to get married in a Lutheran church there on November 28, 1928.

"Why do kids do things like that?" said Loleta. "We were both crazy. But, we made it work."

She was a graduate from Philip High School and he was working for the railroad. "Then, we never even thought of making it to 79 years. We never thought of that during our marraige.

Our beloved mother passed away peacefully on November 2, 2007, in hospice care in McMinnville, OR, after suffering a severe stroke. She was preceded in death by Ralph, her husband of 52 years.

Born May 17, 1922, in Midland, SD, Stella moved west during World War II and worked in a southern California factory making plywood for Spitfire fighters.

After the war, she worked as a cosmetologist while attending USC.

Dick Noteboom, age 96, of Okaton, died Sunday, November 11, 2007, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Visitation will be held two hours preceding the services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, November 17, at the Evangelical Free Church in Okaton, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Graveside services with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard will be held 12:00 p.m.

Gordon "Doc" Bork, age 86, of Okaton, longtime dentist in the Murdo area, died Thursday, October 25, 2007, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Visitation will be held one hour preceding the services at the church on Thursday.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. CDT, on Thursday, November 1, at St. Peter Lutheran Church south of Midland, with Pastor Glenn Denke officiating.

Music will be provided by Grace DeVries, organist. Ushers will be Bill Eckert and Tom DeVries. Register book attendant will be Margie Esmay.

Katherine "Kathy" Pfeifle, age 64, of Aberdeen, formerly of Philip, died Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at her home in Aberdeen.

Services were held Saturday, October 27, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Monty Dell officiating.

Music was provided by Marianne Frein, pianist, and Maureen Palecek, vocalist. Ushers were Alvin and Brian Pearson.

James Marvin Schanzenbach, age 84, of rural Midland, died Saturday, November 3, 2007, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Services were held Wednesday, November 7, at the Deep Creek Lutheran Church north of Midland, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.

Music was provided by Carmen Alleman, organist, with congregational hymns. Register book attendant was Gene Hudson. Ushers were Julian Roseth and Dick Hudson.

Helen Obr, age 88, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Belvidere, died Monday, November 5, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 8, at the Belvidere Community Church in Belvidere, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Visitation will be held two hours preceding the services at the church.

Music will be provided by Marjorie Street, organist, Syd Iwan, pianist, with congregational hymns. Usher is Tom DeVries.

The Philip City Council met on Monday, November 5th.

A lawsuit has been filed against the city. Emily Kroetch is asking for a declaratory judgement regarding property. After an executive session, the council decided to take no action until legal council can be consulted.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has granted permission for the Philip Volunteer Fire Department to use a structure on Park Avenue as fire fighter training. Any shingles, furniture and carpeting must first be removed.

The Haakon County Board of Commissioners was informed Tuesday, November 6, 2007, that work by Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern crews is slated to begin early in 2008 on a 107 mile stretch from Pierre to Wall.

The work is planned in three segments. In 2008 two lengths between Pierre and just west of Midland will be completed. The first length or railroad bed is between mileposts 486.2 and 490.9 just to the west of Ft. Pierre.

The Trauma Wars second place award goes to Linda Smith and Lola Roseth.

The Philip and Midland area women recently competed as a team in the fifth annual Trauma Wars competition at the South Dakota Emergency Medical Technician Association's annual conference.

SD-EMTs met in Rapid City October 25th through 28th with at least eight hours of classes held each day. Sponsored by Sanford USD Medical Center-Trauma Services, the competition involved an emergency scenario and a moulaged patient. Basic EMTs, intermediates and paramedics competed.
