Economic Development “Welcome to Philip” signage

“I think it will be one of the most attractive signs to be seen,” stated Jerry Kroetch to the Philip Economic Development Committee during its meeting on Thursday, July 29.

He was referring to a proposed cut-metal silhouette, welcome-to-Philip sign to be placed west of town on Highway 14. The 6 x 36 foot sign will stand upon 40’ long 10” I-beams.

2006 Circus Fiesta coming to Philip

The Philip Chamber of Commerce is once again sponsoring the George Carden International Circus.

The two performances on Saturday, July 15, will be at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Tickets will be available one hour before showtime. The circus’s three rings will be set up at the Philip Roping Arena.

The George Carden International Circus is known for its highwire acts, elephants, tigers, clowns, aerialists, jugglers and more. Owner/producer, George Carden, is one of the largest producers of circus entertainment in North America.

Philip City Council updates on water restrictions, street project

The July meeting of the Philip City Council was held in the Community Room of the Haakon County Courthouse on Wednesday the 5th, instead of Monday the 3rd, because of the Independence Day holiday.

The Oath of Office was solemnly taken by council members Monte Palecek, John Kangas, Shirley Chin, and Greg Arthur, who are beginning new terms. Kangas is the new council president and Palecek the vice-president.

Grady R. Word

Grady Richard Word of Hermosa, SD died Saturday morning July 8, 2006 at Rapid City Regional Hospital as the result of a horse related accident. Grady was the oldest of four boys born to Don and Phyllis Word of Belvidere, SD on May 26, 1957. Grady was very proud of his Word family name and studied passionately his family heritage.

Grady’s life followed many passions. One was his genuine love for horses and cattle. Raised in a ranching background Grady was most proud to ride among his friends and neighbors and do cattle work.

Larry Sandal

Larry Sandal, age 68, a long time Plainview, SD, rancher, died Monday evening, July 10, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation was held Thursday, July 13, at the Philip Armory, with a wake service led by Deacon Marlon Leneaugh of Mission on Thursday evening.

Funeral services were Friday morning, July 14, at the Philip Armory with Rev.

Gladys Reeves

Gladys Carr Reeves, age 95, of Lovington, NM, passed away July 5, 2006, at Lovington Good Samaritan Care Center.

Services were held Saturday, July 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Lovington with Rev. Vergil Ichtertz officiating. Interment was in Resthaven Cemetery.

Gladys was born June 5, 1911, in Philip, SD. She was married to Sidney A. Reeves on May 20, 1952, in Clovis, NM.

Lester Collins

Lester Collins went to be with the Lord on July 4, 2006. His daughters, Micki Erk and Vicki Neiderworder, and his son-in-law, Larry Neiderworder, were at his bedside when he passed on at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, SD.

Lester was born Feb. 15, 1915, at Whitewood, SD, to Edwin and Dena (Osloond) Collins. He was one of 13 children and was educated in the Rapid City area.

On March 30, 1935, Lester married Viola Harris in Rapid City. From there they moved to the Limestone area near Custer, and later to Pleasant Valley, also near Custer.

Ruth Fairchild

Memorial services for Ruth Fairchild were held Monday, July 3, at the United Church in Philip with Pastor Mark Ford officiating.

Music was provided by Marilyn Millage, organist, and Elvera Moos, vocalist. Ushers were George Gittings and Ed Morrison.

Ruth Sherwood was born May 19, 1918, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, SD, the daughter of Mervin Curtis and Fleta May (Weeks) Sherwood.

Ruth grew up in Philip, attended Philip elementary school. She graduated valedictorian of her 8th grade class in 1933, and was the valedictorian of her 1937 high school class.

Ercell E. Albin

Ercell E. Albin, age 92, of Parkton, MD, formerly of Belvidere, SD, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at her residence in Maryland.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m on Thursday, July 6, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m.
