It is Championship Rodeo time in South Dakota once again as the 51st Annual South Dakota Rodeo Association Finals will be held in the Beef Complex building on the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron. The dates are October 13, 14 and 15. The Friday and Saturday, October 13-14, performances begin at 6:30 p.m., with the Sunday, October 15, performances at 2:00 p.m.

Friday night is family night at the SDRA Finals. Saturday night is Patriotism night - SDRA style, Saturday is also jam-packed with jackpot ropings and barrel racings.

In the first quarter, Scottie Zane Fees went from scoring a one-yard touchdown to later scoring on from 49-yards out. The first extra-point attempt failed, while Fees carried in the second.

To finish off the second half, the ball carrier for the 29-yard touchdown run was, again, Fees.

The third quarter scoring was done mostly by Scottie Casey Cuny. He first ran 66 yards to score, then later ran 47 yards for another touchdown.

The objective of the School to Work program is "to give students an occupational experience in an area that they have a career interest," said program director Brigitte Brucklacher. "They will find out if this is something they have an interest and an aptitude in and to pursue it or not."

This year there are 14 juniors and seniors in the program; ranging in training environments from newswriting to veterinary science to mechanics.

Students fill out a resume and go through the interview process, just as any applicant would when applying for a job.

The Lady Scotties hosted the Lemmon Cowgirls to a one-two-three defeat on Thursday, September 28. The final scores were 25-17, 25-21, 25-19. The Philip volleyball team now stands at 11 wins and nine losses for the season.

Serving: Philip - 64 of 65 (8 aces). Leaders: Taylor Holman - 17 of 17 (5 aces); Sarah Foland - 16 of 16 (3 aces); Tylissa Fitch - 12 of 12 (2 aces).

Receiving: Philip 25 of 34. Leaders: Fitch - 8 of 10; Foland - 8 of 10; Lyndsay Mann - 7 of 10.

Setting: Philip - 87 of 95.

Wind and elevation added to the challenge of this 4,000 meter girls' varsity coarse, which travels around the base of a small mountain. Spectators can see only the first and last half miles of the course. The first quarter mile goes uphill, separating the leaders from the main pack early on. Emily Schofield and Brandy Bartels worked together to attack the hill and lead their Scotties. Jennifer Stangle and Katie Coyle worked hard to keep their teammates in sight as the pack of runners disappeared behind the mountain.

As they returned, Bartels again lead the Scotties team.

Emmer Hulce, age 80, of Midland, died Wednesday, September 27, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Funeral services were held 2:00 Saturday, September 30, at the Open Bible Church in Midland, with Pastor Randy Ellendorf officiating. Ushers were Ray Gartner and Greg Arthur. Pallbearers were Norman Payne, Doug Johnson, Charles Williams, Wes Jamison, Ronnie Gartner and Larry Neiderworder.

Interment was in the Midland Cemetery.

Emmer Edward Hulce was born December 27, 1925, in Presho, South Dakota, the second son of Albert and May (Darling) Hulce.

Guidelines have been announced for the South Dakota Livestock Assistance Grant Program, which provides funds to aid livestock producers suffering forage losses due to the 2006 drought.

The assistance is targeted to the foundation grazing herds, so only breeding animals are eligible. Feedlot and confinement animals are specifically excluded.

Livestock producers that routinely graze eligible beef cattle and sheep may qualify for this assistance.

A new risk management tool for pasture, rangeland and forage is now available for the 2007 crop year. This program allows livestock producers to purchase insurance protection for losses of forage produced for grazing or harvesting for hay. Insurance can be purchased for pasture-rangeland, or hayland-forage, or both.

The program may be purchased from crop insurance agents up until the November 30th sales deadline.

The Haakon County Grand Jury convened Wednesday, September 27, to investigate the August 12 shooting of Harold Lee Cleveland in Midland.

Haakon County Deputy Sheriff Mark Foley will be trading his badge for jungle bunny desert camouflage outfits in Afghanistan because of the activation of the South Dakota National Guard. He is in a military police unit and will leave Philip on October 18th for traning in Fort Bliss, Texas.

Foley is a native of Philip, the son of Tom and Ann Foley, and a member of their well-known local family.

Mark is 39, single, currently holds the rank of Staff Sergeant and is no stranger to military service.
