My daughter was not waking up. This is rare, but with me in the household, she knows better. I poked my head into her room (holding desperately to my safety rope) and yelled loud enough to penetrate her covers. "Remember, two wrongs do not make a right, but three lefts do." A few moments later she came out of her room complaining, "Daddy, by the time I figured that out, I was so awake that I couldn't get back to sleep."

That is what a good one-liner is supposed to do - make you think.

Floy May Fugate, age 92, of Rapid City, died Sunday morning, October 8, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a 40-year battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 11, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Music was provided by Jean Weller, organist, with congregational hymns. Ushers were Cliff Parke and Eric Wilmarth.

Two roads open up in my "working" vacations and I take the one less traveled by - which has always made all the difference. I am, you see, a traditionalist when it comes to vacations. I bring a few books I've been meaning to read for years, but, as it turns out, never get time to read them.

I wander into libraries and used book stores … the ones less traveled are more helpful and friendly; but for me, and Philip, the journey remains unfinished.

As a writer, I am against censorship; I want to get people reading - especially the young.

Sixty airmen from various units throughout the 114th Fighter Wing departed Joe Foss Field on Saturday, October 7, for an undisclosed operating location in Southwest Asia.

They were deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as part of the United States Air Force's Air Expeditionary Force (AEF) rotation plan. These deploying members will join the 74 airmen who deployed on September 11, 2006.

Librarian Alison Kattlemann applied for a Library Service and Technology Act grant through the South Dakota State Library. She was notified in mid-summer that the library had received a $3,280 grant.

With those grant dollars she was able to purchase four Dell, Dimension 1100, flat screen computers. The computers arrived in mid-September.

All four computers have been installed and are up and running. Kattleman noted since the computers were put in about three weeks ago, the number of computer patrons has risen by 50 percent.

AARP, South Dakota Public Broadcasting and the South Dakota Newspaper Association will join to host a series of candidate forums to air on SDPB Television and SDPB Radio.

The forum schedule is:

•October 12 at 8:00 p.m. CT - Attorney General

•October 17 at 8:00 p.m. CT - U.S. House

•October 19 at 8:00 p.m.

As evidenced at their meeting on Thursday, October 5, the Board of Haakon County Commissioners continue to work with the county's emergency manager to prepare the county for a major emergency.

Last summer the board approved the sheriff's office as the designated emergency dispatch location. In the event that electricity is affected, a generator would be needed to run that area and the shelter, located in the courthouse basement.

Lola Roseth, the county's emergency manager, met with the commissioners to discuss what size of generator would be needed to power those two areas.
