Philip vs. Stanley Co.

The Stanley County Buffaloes could have challenged the abilities of any team. Though the Scotties lost 41-55, the competition is going to be less daunting farther into the season. Even during this game, impressive defense on both sides kept the score low.

The Philip Scotties boys’ basketball team is starting to understand how to play “organized ball.” That is the term Coach Guptill uses as opposed to playground ball. Passing, set-ups, box-outs, rebounds and a team effort are all visibly improving.

“Both teams took the game up to a whole new level.” exclaimed Head Girls’ Basketball Coach Bobbie Jo Hix. The 35-39 loss to the Stanley County Lady Buffs was, none-the-less, a good game.

The girls definitely got the experience needed for future games. Hix said, “I’m proud of the girls. They were awesome.” The audience also got a taste of fast and exciting play, especially defensive action.

The details concerning next year’s four-day school week is being ironed out by the Haakon School Board.

At the December 20 meeting, some tentative specifics were voiced from varying groups. Leaving the block scheduling and going to a seven class per day schedule seems likely, desired especially by the student body. Also likely, but voiced mostly by the teaching staff, are two to three study halls scheduled throughout the day.

The priority-setting meeting in Philip on Wednesday evening, December 15, was the follow-up to the Philip community assessment held on October 12-14.

Philip has already begun addressing some issues and is determining what projects can be pursued to solve these issues. Andrea Cook, president of the Haakon Community Library, announced that the generous $50,000 gift from Margaret Durnill was opening doors for library expansion.

Iola Carr Broderson, age 90, passed away at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, MT, Friday, December 17, 2004.

A memorial service was held Monday, December 20, at Cremation or Funeral Gallery. Inurnment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Iola was born January 12, 1914, in Wetumka, OK, to William Edger Jones and Bessie Carr Jones. She graduated from Oklahoma City, OK, in 1932 with the nickname of Ace as she was a star in all athletics.

Iola married James E. Carr in Hot Springs, SD, on June 11, 1935.

Margaret L. "Maggie" Wittmer, age 58, of Wall, SD, died Friday December 17, 2004 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, December 20, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with Father Leo Hausmann as celebrant.

Music was provided by Rita and Gene Patterson. Ushers were Jim Bloom, Donny Kelly and Donny Schone. Pallbearers were Dennis and Doug Schone, Lynn Culver, Terrell Ramsey, Tommy Velez, Alan Waldschmidt, Alan Born and Leroy Stortenbecker.

Interment was at the Quinn Cemetery.

Kyan Chance Grezik-Hodge, 5-1/2 months, passed away Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Kyan was affectionately known by family and friends as “Little Man”. He was a very happy little boy, who made everyone smile. He was so full of love and gave it freely to everyone who was blessed to be around him. He loved his sister very much and always made her laugh. Little Man was just learning to sit up and enjoy the world around him. He will be missed by every life he touched.

Where does Santa Claus get his capital outlay and cash flow? This is an important question for a skin-flint, penny-pinching, cheap-skate like myself. I don’t buy gifts at Tiffany's; or even at super-chain department stores; or even at box-it-yourself outlet warehouses. I go to rummage sales and forgotten attics. (Don’t tell my family.) I have been tempted to “forget” putting the gift in the pretty box and “remember” it for the recipient after the after-Christmas sales. Besides, I’ve always been told that it’s the thought that counts.
