Clayton W. Nelson

Clayton W. Nelson, Pierre, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2011, after a long, courageous battle with leukemia, at the age of 86.

He was born December 26, 1924, on his grandfather's ranch near Midland, S.D., in a partial log house. Clayton was the son of Oliver and Edrie (Faubel) Nelson.

He attended Pleasant View #63 until he completed the eighth grade, and then went on to Midland High School where he graduated in 1943.

Clayton was drafted into the U.S. Navy on October 23, 1943, in Philip.


Irvel N. "Irv" Morford

Irvel Neil "Irv" Morford, age 71 of Philip, S.D., died Friday, September 2, 2011, as a result of an accident near Philip.

Irvel Neil Morford was born on January 28, 1940, in Highmore to Newton and Dorothy (Reisner) Morford. He grew up on the family farm north of Highmore and attended rural school in Washington Township, having the same male teacher all eight years of grade school. He attended Highmore High School, graduating in 1958. In 1959, he moved to Pierre and worked for Al's Construction, driving truck and delivering ready-mix concrete.


Ted Kunz

Ted Kunz, age 76 of Sioux Falls, formerly of Philip, died Friday, September 2, 2011, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Ted K. Kunz was born May 31, 1935, on the family farm near Strasburg, N.D., the son of Andrew and Lizzie (Klingman) Kunz. He grew up on the family farm and received his education at Pollock, graduating from Pollock High School in 1952. After graduation, he attended Northern State College in Aberdeen for two years and received his teaching certificate. He returned to Pollock and taught elementary school for one year. In 1955, Ted entered the U.S.


Brian J. Fedderson

Brian J. Feddersen, age 23 of Murdo, S.D., died Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at his home in Murdo.

Brian James Feddersen was born January 14, 1988, in Pierre.

Brian, son of Milton and Judy (Krueger) Feddersen, spent most of his life in Murdo where he attended Jones County School. Growing up, Brian enjoyed spending time with his family outdoors fishing because it gave him time to explore.

As Brian began to start high school he fell in love with the sport of football as you could tell by the heart he displayed on the field.


Closing Milesville Post Office? USPS/town meeting September 14

To discuss the plans to possibly close the Milesville Post Office, an meeting has been scheduled by United States Postal Service (USPS) officials. The open meeting is set for 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Milesville Hall.

USPS representatives will be present to discuss with community members the need for the Milesville Post Office. All persons who are concerned about the services provided by the Milesville Post Office are encouraged to attend.


Wee Won Day Care takes over Small Pine Daycare

Friday, September 2, was the last official day of the Small Pine Daycare, owned and operated by Philip Health Services, Inc.

Tuesday, September 6, was the first official day of the Wee Won Day Care. Erin Fitzgerald is the new owner of the business, building and land at 516 W. Pine Street, Philip. She is the manager and the sole full-time employee of the center. Hours will be 6:00 a.m.

Website will offer live coverage of Philip Scottie football

Sdsportsbuzz.com personalities ... Kadoka’s Royal Addison, left, and Philip’s Nick Heeb will be previewers and commentators of west river nine-man football during the 2011 season for their sports website.

Philip High School's 2011 Scottie football team was under media scrutiny Tuesday, August 23.

During practice that day, the athletes of the nine-man Class "B" Scotties football team were video recorded, and head coach Keven Morehart was interviewed by two personalities of a fledgling sports website.

Quad County Relay For Life - 2011

Hand in hand ... Walking or riding, cancer survivor or care giver, close neighbor or from a different town, but no strangers, as people gathered together for the 2011 Quad County Relay For Life held this year in Midland, Saturday, August 27.

Saturday, August 27, the Midland City Park was this year's site for the Quad County Relay For Life, an annual cancer awareness program and fundraiser to help pay for research to find a cure and prevention for cancer.

Teams of volunteers were joined by scores of individuals at noon to begin setting up team camps. Registration of cancer survivors began at 2:00 p.m.

Opening ceremonies began at 4:30 p.m.
