Helen A. O’Connor, age 98, of Capa, died Monday evening, January 5, 2004, at the Philip Nursing Home.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Midland, with a rosary and prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Midland.

Interment will be in the Midland Cemetery.

Bird J. Patterson, age 100, of Kadoka, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at the Kadoka Care Center.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with John Kaiser officiating. Ushers will be Preston Patterson and Colter Carlson.

Lola M. Smith, age 85, of Kadoka, formerly of Sioux Falls, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 8, at 1:00 p.m at the Kadoka Cemetery with Pastor Ann Schlossnagle officiating.

Lola M. Smith was born January 24, 1919, in Kadoka, SD, the daughter of Al and Clara (Rooks) Smith. She grew up on a ranch east of Long Valley in the Wanamaker area. She received her elementary education in that area prior to graduating from St. Mary’s High School in Springfield, SD. She received her nurses training at St.

Travis Todd Schofield, age 37, of Midland died Saturday morning, July 3, 2004 as a result of an auto accident northwest of Murdo.

Services were held Wednesday, July 7, in Midland. Interment was in the Midland Cemetery with Rush Funeral Home of Philip in charge of the arrangements.

Travis Todd Schofield was born on his grandparents’ original family homestead southwest of Midland on Brave Bull Creek, the son of Harry W. "Hank" and Eva Pauline (Fosheim) Schofield.

Shelly Lynn (Fortune) Longfox, age 44, of Hays, MT, formerly of Miles City, MT, passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2004 at the Benefis East Hospital in Great Falls.

Shelly was born in Quinn, SD, on July 2, 1960, the daughter of Vern and Wildene (White) Fortune. In 1962, she moved with her family from South Dakota to the family ranch near Miles City where she loved raising her 4-H steers and working cattle. She attended Garland Country School and graduated from Custer County High School.

Lucile V. Harry, age 91, of Philip, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 6, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Paul Bly officiating. Music was provided by Marlis Doud, organist, and Jan Hewitt, vocalist. Ushers were Dave Calhoon and Gene Deuchar. Pallbearers were Michael Schofield, Glenn O’Connell, Morris and Barry Jones, Jim Petoske, Wylie Schwalm, Craig Warren and Carl Snook.

Interment with Eastern Star Services was held at the Masonic Cemetery, Philip.

Some local cowboys and a cowgirl have ridden their way to several top places in South Dakota Rodeo Association competitions. Their names – Jeff Jones, Morris Jones, Jim O’Dea and Jody Marone – have steadily appeared in rodeo results and standings over the first weeks of the South Dakota Rodeo Association season.

As of June 29th, Jeff Jones of Midland was ranked number one in the Men’s All-Around, pulling together his earnings from team penning, calf roping and team roping. He has been participating in rodeo for over 20 years.

Small town newspapers were the subject of a recent South Dakota Public Radio Forum call-in show.

Guests on the show were Don Ravellette, publisher of seven weekly newspapers in Western South Dakota; Kathy Nelson, who along with her husband Jim publishes The Timber Lake Topic; and Jon Hunter, publisher of The Madison Daily Leader.

A new program at Philip Health Services will help target heart disease, a leading cause of death for South Dakotans.

Using a combination of blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol screenings, a software program, and a physician’s knowledge, this program will help identify those at high risk for heart disease, Bob Fugate, PT-ATC, of Philip Health Services said.
