Philip vs. Lemmon

The Philip Scotties volleyball team hosted the Lemmon Cowgirls on September 30.

Four matches were played to determine the best three out of five. The end scores were 25-22, 25-9, 23-25 and 25-18.

Head coach for the Scotties is Kim Foley and the assistant coach is RaeAnn Snyder.

Philip at Lead Competition

The Philip Scotties competed in the Lead Annual Invitational Cross Country Competition at the Tomahawk Golf Course six miles south of Lead.

This was a varsity-only “A” Division race, thus giving three Scotties their first varsity competition in 2004. An “A” Division team consists of 6 runners; the first 4 are counters, while the next two are pushers to break any scoring ties. The lower the team score, the better. The first 15 places earn medals.

Franklin Willis Ogle went to be with his Savior on September 30, 2004, at the age of 82.

Memorial services were held Sunday, October 3, at the Kadoka Nursing Home, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Graveside services with full military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard were held Wednesday, October 6, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating.

Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka was in charge of arrangements.

Franklin Willis Ogle was born January 22, 1922 in Simeon, NE, one of nine children born to Charley and Jessie

Mildred Leone "Millie" Rust, age 84, of Kadoka, formerly of Murdo, died Wednesday morning, September 29, 2004, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Services were held Saturday, October 2, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo, with Pastor David A. Brinkmeyer officiating.

Music was provided by Karen Royer, organist, and Debbie Cressy, vocalist. Ushers were Monte and Guy Anker. Pallbearers were Matt Cressy, Cory and Cole Rust, Josh Penman, Justin and Lance Ivory.

Interment was in the Murdo Cemetery.

No major issues were before the Haakon County Board of Commissioners at their regular meeting Tuesday, October 5.

Kenny Neville, Highway Superintendent, reviewed events in his department. The board gave approval to Neville to purchase the 1997 Chevy pickup they had on trial from Federal Surplus in Box Elder.

He noted all FEMA work, except one area, is done. The last area involves downed trees that are in a wet location.

“Pioneering Our Future” is the theme for the Philip area and Haakon County Community Assessment to be held on October 12-14, 2004.

“The homesteaders and ranchers who settled in this area took charge of their lives,” says Glenn Parsons, President of the Philip Chamber of Commerce.

“They didn’t just let things happen to them, but set about to improve their lives by opportunities available to them. They organized into communities that cooperated in order to improve their lives. The same needs to be true for us today.

Terry Henrie is the new physician’s assistant at the Philip Medical Clinic.

Henrie and his wife, Jennifer, both grew up in the Rapid City area. He was schooled at the School of Mines, the University of Minnesota, and most recently at Billings, MT. Henrie will be practicing family medicine under the licensure and guidance of Dr. George Mangulis, Dr. David Holman, and Dr. Coen Klopper.

Henrie’s PA licensing requirements will soon be fulfilled for South Dakota and nationally.

Elmer Briggs, 74 of Midland died Monday, September 20, 2004, at St. Mary’s TCU.

Services were held Friday, September 24, at Isburg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dallas McKinley officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery.

Elmer Briggs was born on December 20, 1929, in Aberdeen, SD, to Fred and Mabel (Beckwith) Briggs.

The Jones County/Midland Rebels lost to the Kimball Kiotes at Murdo with a 37-8 score.

The Kiotes leaped ahead in the first quarter. With 8:43 still on the clock, a 23 yard run by Kyle Pickner gained the first touchdown. Kyle McGregor ran in the extra points. Kimball kept pushing. With 17 seconds left, Logan Schmidt passed 20 yards to Derek Ashley for another touchdown. McGregor repeated his earlier run. The score was 16-0.

The second quarter also started quickly, then stalled. At 6:48, McGregor crashed through with a 1-yard run to score.
