Michael J. Chapell

Michael J. Chapell, 58, Rapid City, passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at his home.
Michael Joseph Chapell was born on February 18, 1954 in New Orleans, LA to Henry and Bernice (Goodsell) Chapell. Bernice and the kids later moved to South Dakota. He attended school in Wall, SD. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971 until he was honorably discharged on October 31, 1974.
He married Sharon Hoag and they were blessed with two daughters, Alecia and Angela. Mike and Sharon later divorced.
Mike met Carrie and they spent many happy years together. They were married on September 17, 2011.

Ambulance District becomes reality for Eastern Pennington County

Wall community members met on Wednesday, July 11, to establish a board for the Ambulance District which won the election by an overwhelming 264 votes.

Haakon School District new year

The Monday, July 16, meeting of the Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education began with Mark Radway and Jake Fitzgerald reciting their oathes of office as they began their terms.

Walter Van Tassel

Walter Van Tassel, age 88 of Midland, died Thursday, July 12, 2012, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Walter Harlan Van Tassel was born February 16, 1924, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Walter E. and Ruth Van Tassel. Walter (“Junior” to many) moved to the Midland area in 1929 where he lived with his grandparents, William and Pearl Lee, on the 1912 homestead ranch north of Ottumwa and was raised like brothers and sister with his aunt, Fern (Lee) Konst, and his uncle, Bill Lee.
Walter was educated at the Mattison Country School where he graduated the eighth grade.

Jack Brunsch

Jack Brunsch, age 60 of Norris, South Dakota , died July 9, 2012, suddenly at his ranch.

Jack Louis Brunsch was born March 17, 1952, in Kadoka, South Dakota, the son of Paul and Lucille (Peck) Brunsch. He began grade school in a one room school house located two miles from the ranch home. He later attended grade school at Norris, before attending Bennett County High School, graduating in 1970. He began his college career at South Dakota State University in Brookings, then transferred to Missoula, Montana, before graduating from Black Hills State, majoring in Biology and Chemistry.

Jewel J. Coverdale

Jewel J. Coverdale, age 100, of Midland, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Jewel J. Belkstrom was born January 30, 1912, in western Stanley County, the daughter of Charles and Amanda (Fetter) Belkstrom. She grew up in the Stanley County area and attended rural schools through the 10th grade, then attended Pierre High School. After graduation, she went to college in Aberdeen where she attained her teacher’s certificate. She, along with her sister, taught school in several rural schools in the area.

Arnold Matt

Arnold Matt, age 86, passed away peacefully at his home in New Underwood with family at his side on Wednesday, July 4, 2012. He lived, loved and laughed well.
Arnold Arthur Matt was born September 22, 1925, in a farm house to Joseph and Selma Martinson Matt in the Elk Vale community north of Rapid City. In 1928, he moved with his parents and siblings, Gladys and Julius to his mother’s homestead in the Boneita Springs area close to the Belle Fourche River. His brother, Henry, was born in 1933.

Dennis J. Kennedy

Dennis J. Kennedy, age 66 of Philip, S.D., died June 29, 2012, at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City.
Dennis Jay Kennedy was born July 13, 1945, in Philip, S. D., the son of Howard and Dorothy (Aaberg) Kennedy. He grew up in Philip where he attended school through high school. He graduated from South Dakota State University in pharmacy in 1968. Upon graduation, took a job with Walgreen Drug Stores in Phoenix, Ariz.

Windstorm brings damage

The storm that came through Haakon County, Saturday evening, June 9, affected everyone in some manner.
According to Susan Sanders, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service out of Rapid City, a cold front came through from the southwest. “There were a couple of different lines, and they produce stronger winds.”

Alex “Bod” Livermont

Alex “Bod” Livermont, age 66 of Kadoka, S.D., died Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at his home in Kadoka.
Alex "Bod" Livermont was born March 26, 1946, in Pine Ridge, the son of Oliver and Emma M. (Wiedman) Livermont. He was raised on the ranch southeast of Kadoka on the Alec Livermont Ranch. He attended school in Kadoka. After his schooling, Bob worked at various places around Kadoka, including Burns Bros. Truck Stop for several years.
