The sixth annual Badlands Matched Bronc Ride was held in Kadoka, Friday, August 19.

There were 20 cowboys competing in the first round of action. Nine made their eight-second rides to move on to the second round. Ryan Kruse, Interior, drew back for a spot in the second round. Five bronc riders made the whistle and advanced to the short go.

This summer's flooding of the Missouri River has caused damage to property and displaced residents, mostly in the Pierre, Fort Pierre and Dakota Dunes areas. The South Dakota National Guard was called out to assist with the coordination of building levees, with the security of property and with maintaining the levees.

Philip's Mark Foley was one of the guardsmen called to be on duty during the ordeal.

Students from Philip and Kadoka high schools are invited to join their peers at the Wall High School for a free presentation and a free concert, Wednesday, September 14.

The Todd Becker Foundation, created following the death of 18-year-old high school student, Todd Becker, in the spring of 2005, will share their "Where is your life headed?" presentation.

The day's events will include an assembly for grades 9-12 starting at 1:15. Then, at 7:00 p.m., another assembly that includes a live concert is open to students and the rest of the public.

The Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education's meeting Monday, August 15, was the last meeting before classes are to begin August 24.

Four open enrollment requests were approved. According to Superintendent Keven Morehart, these students are "coming this way" from out of the Haakon School District. Because of contacts and inquiries to school administration and board members, it is anticipated that a total of approximately a dozen students will apply for open enrollment before classes begin.

During the early morning hours of Monday, August 15, the front door of Zeeb Pharmacy on Center Avenue, Philip, was shattered.

A passerby noticed the damage and phoned 911. The Winner dispatch contacted the Philip City Police at approximately 5:15 a.m., and Philip Police Officer David Butler was first on the scene. He contacted the South Dakota Department of Criminal Investigation, cordoned off the scene with a "Police Line: Do Not Cross" tape, and began collecting evidence at the scene.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. DCI detective Pat West arrived.

Boyd Parsons, Sr., age 81 of Rapid City, South Dakota, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Boyd Leroy Parsons was born March 4, 1930, in Milesville, South Dakota, the son of Bill and Helen (Elshere) Parsons. He was raised in Milesville and graduated from Philip High School in 1949. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 and had an honorable discharge in 1955.

Boyd married Joanne Hanrahan March 13th, 1953, and to this union were born three children, Boyd, Jr., Sheryl and Byron.

Catherine A. "Cathy" Morrison, age 55 of Interior, South Dakota, died Thursday, August 18, 2011, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Catherine Anne Scott was born on May 31, 1956 to Marion and Mary (McClure) Scott in Gillette, Wyoming. She grew up on a ranch 20 miles north of Gillette with three sisters, Marilyn, Debbie and Cindy. She completed all 13 years of school in the Campbell County area.

Cathy married Dave Morrison on March 17, 1978 in Gillette, and together they raised three kids, Tammy, Nate and Nick.

Gordon R. Pederson, age 84 of Wall, South Dakota, died Saturday, August 20, 2011, at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Gordon Roy Pederson was born August 8, 1927, in Gayville, South Dakota, the son of Roy E. and Gladys (Masker) Pederson. He attended school in Rapid City, graduating from the Rapid City School System .

He was drafted into the Army for WWII serving from 1945 - 1947. He then attended Yankton College until 1950, when he was recalled in the Army as a Staff Sergeant in 1950 for the Korean Conflict.

Marjorie Pellerzi, 86, of Pierre, died Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Golden Living in Pierre.

Marjorie was born on March 9, 1925, to Harry and Maude (Waddell) Newby. She grew up on her parents' ranch located seven miles northwest of Four Corners. She went to high school in Pierre. On October 9, 1944, she married Francis John Pellerzi in Cumberland, Md. They moved to Pierre in 1945 where they made their home and raised three children.

Marjorie retired after 30 plus years of service from the S.D. Game Fish and Parks department.

Dwayne "Sonny" Newman, age 73 of Philip, died Saturday, August 13, 2011, at his home west of Philip.

Dwayne Eugene Newman, better known as "Sonny" to his family and friends, was born September 12, 1937, on his parents' homestead eight miles west of Philip, the son of Harry and June Elizabeth (Carstensen) Newman.

He grew up on the homestead and attended grade school in Philip for two years before attending grade school in Quinn for one year, then returning back to Philip, where he graduated from Philip High School in 1956.
