The Philip Scotties golf team participated in the Meadowbrook Challenge Golf Tournament, Tuesday, April 5, in Rapid City.

The Philip team members shot a total score of 340. Individual scores were: Tristen Rush - 52+47=99, Trey DeJong - 68+56=124, Tate DeJong - 58+59=117, and Gavin Snook 66+60=126.

As far as the boys' teams go, the White River team took top honors with a total four-player, 18-hole score of 282. White River was headed by Skyler Bordueaux with a 45+42=87, which earned him the top individual spot.

The Harry Weller Invitational track meet was held Tuesday, April 12, in Kadoka.

Tom Parquet, head coach for the Philip Scotties track and field team, said, "State track qualifiers in this meet were Jeff O'Connell in the 200 meter dash and Dakota Bauman in the discus." He said that there were lots of personal bests and the athletes had a different experience by running under the lights.

"We are still experimenting with different people running different events and running in different orders in the relays.

Mass of Christian burial for Maynard Dupris, age 64, of Cherry Creek was celebrated Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at the Cherry Creek Blue Gym.

Burial was at the Maynard Dupris Ranch Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Maynard passed away Thursday, April 14, 2011, at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, N.D.

Maynard Charles Dupris was born on October 23, 1946, to Rosalie Straight Head - Dupris at the Old Cheyenne Agency.

Delmer Volmer, age 80 of Presho, S.D., Sunday, died April 17, 2011, at the Winner Regional Nursing Home.

Delmer Herman Volmer was born January 22, 1931, at his folks' farm at Draper, S.D., the son of Frank and Mary (Rubin) Volmer. Delmer grew up on his folks farm, graduating from Draper High School in 1949. While in school, he participated in baseball, basketball and football. Delmer had a boy deliver a note to a cheerleader and it was given to Delores by mistake, but turned out to be a good mistake.

Cutting costs wherever possible, the Haakon County Board of Commissioners denied the library board's request for the K-gee's building and the sheriff's request for a new pickup.

Haakon County Auditor Patricia Freeman updated the commission on information she found regarding the Haakon County Public Library. She said that replies from Deene Dayton, director of Local Government Assistance with the South Dakota Office of Legislative Audit, in regards to statutes for libraries, there were none that said the county had to provide a library.

Tidal waves were sent through South Dakota State University last week as serious funding cuts were made to balance the university's Fiscal Year 2012 budget in response to a 10 percent reduction in state appropriations, which amounted to $1.3 million for university proper. The total - including the net cut, unavoidable costs and transition funding - is $3.825 million.

Recently a number of South Dakota counties have been pursuing tax freeze opt-outs with the Haakon County Board of Commissioners following suit.

Citing an increase in the cost of fuel and other expenditures combined with revenues not keeping up with those costs the commissioners approved a three-year $500,000 opt-out. After the three years the board hopes that the TransCanada Keysotne XL Pipeline revenues will be flowing into their coffers.

In an effort to keep the taxes low the board members, since 1995, have not taken the consumer price index increase allowed by the state.

Negotiation agreements for certified and classified contracts for next school year have been approved. There will be no increases in wages, benefits, steps or lane changes for any school district employees.

This was approved at the Monday, April 18, board of education meeting. The district will now begin offering contracts to individuals for the 2011-2012 school year.

The elementary and high school handbooks for next year were also approved. Superintendent Keven Morehart said that the only real change is the wording in the federal parental policy.

The Philip High School senior music trip to New York City, this year from March 30 to April 3, was "amazing," "awesome," "great," and "what an experience" according to music instructor Barb Bowen relating the most heard expressions from the seniors.

After being in high school chorus or band, or both, for all four years of their Philip High School years, the senior students then had to earn their individual funds to afford the trip.

Our loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on March 20, 2011.

Bill was born October 5, 1919, in Ash Creek, S.D., to W.J. and Mary Wilson. He grew up on a dairy farm in South Dakota and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935-36. He worked as a ranch hand in Wyoming and was an extra in the movie "Bad Man of Wyoming" filmed in Jackson Hole in 1940.
