The local Masons hosted a free South Dakota Child Identification Program (CHIP), Tuesday and Wednesday, September 20-21, at the elementary gymnasium.

Over a dozen Masons volunteered to man the computers and other stations as a total of 113 young people went through the line.

The identification process generates individual completed identification kits that are given to the parent or guardian to take home for safekeeping. Nothing was kept by anyone else except for the permission form.

Gloria J. "Jeanie" Kingsbury, age 63, of Pine Island, Minn., formerly of Kadoka, S.D., died Sunday, September 25, 2011, in Pine Island, Minn.

Gloria Jean Grimes was born on October 28, 1947, in Rapid City to Lewis E. and Elsie V. (Peterson) Grimes. She grew up in Weta, attended and graduated from high school in Kadoka in 1965. She then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD.

On August 26, 1967, she married John R. Kingsbury in Kadoka. They lived in several communities during their first years of marriage.

Richard W. Johnston, age 82 of Wall, S.D., died Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.

Richard W. Johnston was born in the New Underwood hospital on March 1, 1929, to William and Cecil (Richards) Johnston. They lived at Dalzell, S.D., at the time then later moved to Elm Springs on property adjacent to the Johnston homestead. He attended the Linn School for all of his grade school years. In 1947, he graduated from New Underwood High School. Once he finished high school he rented the Albert Arneson place at Elm Springs.

Eunice Koester, 62 of Pierre, died Tuesday, September 27 at her home in Pierre. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Wednesday, September 28 at Isburg Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 10:00 am Thursday, September 29 at Faith Lutheran Church with burial at Riverside Cemetery

Eunice was born September 21, 1949 to Simon and Rose Elrod. She grew up in Murdo graduating from Jones County High School.

Eunice was employed at Georgia Morse Middle School. She was very proud of her job. She enjoyed decorating the 6th grader's Christmas tree and making an ornament for each student.

The Philip Scottie football team traveled to New Underwood, Friday, September 16, to challenge the Tigers.

The first quarter saw two explosive touchdown plays. New Underwood got on the scoreboard first with a 61-yard rush. The extra point attempt failed, and the score stood at 0-6. Philip retaliated by sending Cody Reder on an 80-yard rush to the endzone. Trying a kick for the first time this season, the Scotties gained the extra point courtesy of Chaney Burns. The first quarter whistle blew on a 7-6 advantage for Philip.

The second quarter belonged to the Scotties.

The Lady Scotties volleyball team traveled to Wall, Saturday,

September 17 to compete in the Wall Triangular.

The Philip varsity defeated the White River Lady Tigers 3-0.

The Haakon County Commission met in special session Tuesday, September 13, to continue discussions involving a liquor license and the 2012 budget.

Bart Ramsey, Philip, applied for the county liquor license for his and his wife, Marcy's, hunting preserve and bed and breakfast business. Recently the state legislature implemented a hunting liquor license that counties can issue for hunting outfitter businesses. The license would be good for September 1 to March 31 of each year. Ramsey chose to apply for a year-round county license instead.

"One of these days we're going to have a whopper," said Philip Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Matt Reckling.

So far this year the fire calls have been for what have turned out to be relatively minor incidences.
