On June 22-23, surveyors from the South Dakota Department of Health visited the Philip Nursing Home for its annual inspection.

Under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the state is required to inspect all nursing homes that provide care to people receiving Medicare and Medicaid.

There are over 180 regulations and standards that Medicare certified nursing homes must uphold at all times to protect the residents.

The Northern Bull Riding Tour will be presented Saturday, August 7, as part of the Haakon/Jackson County Fair and 4-H Achievement Days.

As an extra feature, between the rounds of bull riding at the Philip Roping Arena, 16 West River high school bronc riding cowboys will also compete in their own event. Those teenage cowboys are experienced in saddle bronc riding competition. Most, if not all, have ridden in competition for the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association state finals. They practice every Wednesday evening at the roping arena in Philip.

One of a new generation of South Dakota saddle bronc riders made the biggest splash Saturday night as the 88th annual Days of '76 rodeo closed the chutes for the final time before a near-capacity crowd.

Despite a field featuring three former South Dakota world champion saddle bronc riders -Jeff Willert, Chad Ferley and five-time world champion and legendary cowboy Billy Etbauer - Cole Elshere, one of South Dakota's new breed of bronc busters, stood atop the pack when the dust finally

The three groups that provided activities for area youth this summer will sponsor a community water festival starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Philip City Council meeting Monday, August 2, was almost totally focused on summer construction and project budgets.

Approved building permits included Greg Ferguson to install a meter and pit for a sprinkler system; Coddy Gartner for Terry Henrie for tree stump removals; Trisha Larson for Kindercottage for a fence; Jason Petersen to level and gravel a rear yard; Philip Health Services, Inc. to move a 13'x13' shed from the hospital to 500 West Pine Street; and Gary Stephenson to demolish houses at 405 Hone Street and 402 N. Wood Ave.

Helen Philip, Faringdon, Oxfordshire, England, had known of relatives in America as her dad, Ian, had mentioned them and spoke of James (Scotty) Philip. He had also told her about Wayne C. Lee's book The Man who Saved the Buffalo.

She came across information on the Internet about Scotty Philip. The search pulled up the town of Philip, SD, and a Facebook site about the town. The site had only been up about a month so luck was in the air.

Etta Erdmann has lived in Haakon County nearly her entire life and is glad this is the place she calls home.

Etta has four children, Gene lives in Minneapolis, Minn., Paula and her husband, Johnny Stone, live in Lubbock, Tex., Mitzi Houska lives in Moscow, Idaho, and Rose Curtis lives in Gillette, Wyo. Etta has three grandsons, three granddaughters and one great-grandson.

Etta Griesel was born September 28, 1931, on her family's farm 28 miles north of Philip.

Jackie Wright passed away Saturday July 24, 2010, after a short and courageous battle of cancer.

Jacquelyn K. "Jackie" Wright was born September 23, 1944, to Jack and Ruth Wright in McPherson, Kan. As a child they moved a few places in Kansas and lived in Hyannis, Neb. before moving to Sidney, Neb. Jackie attended grade school and high school in Sidney, graduating in 1963. After high school, she moved back to McPherson, Kan., and attended college at McPherson College until May 1965.

Jackie worked at Sheets Adams Realty while in college.
