Baseball season is here, and this summer Philip has a legion baseball team.

It has been several years since Philip has had a teener baseball team. Now, the team will be called the American Legion Baseball Post 173 in order for older boys to be included in the team. All boys born in the years 1991-1997 are allowed to play on the team.The Philip team is classified in the "B" region of baseball because the Philip High School enrollment is less than 500 students. Throughout the state of South Dakota, there are currently 66 American Legion baseball teams.

The eighth annual Spud Gittings Memorial Golf Tournament was held Sunday, June 20, at the Lake Waggoner Golf Course.

A total of 20 teams entered the nine-hole tournament. There were three flights in the shotgun-start, three-person scramble meet. The tournament is held every year to support the Spud Gittings Memorial Scholarship for second-year college students who graduated from Philip High School. Last year's recipients were Nathan O'Dea and Zane Fees.

"Certified nursing assistants are the first people patients see in the morning and the last they see at night. Our building would not function without CNAs. They are our biggest customer represeatatives," said Carmen Fees, director of nursing at Philip Health Services, Inc.

An annual, national week of special recognition for CNAs was June 10-17, "which appropriately had the weekend included," noted Kent Olson, PHSI administrator. There are 40 full- and part-time CNAs, out of 140 total employees, at PHSI. Olson added, "They are the backbone of any facility such as ours.

The fourth annual Philip Invitational Matched Bronc Ride, Friday, June 18, drew 1,550 at the gate. With spectators, contestants, their families and all the workers, over 2,500 people were in attendance.

The starting 25 cowboys were cut down to a continuing 12. The top bronc ride scorer of the first round was Jake Costello, Newell, who stayed on the bronc Miss Kitty for a score of 80. Hugh Connely, Golden Valley, N.D., scored 79 on the bronc Teddy Bear. Tying with a score of 78 were Louie Brunson, Interior, on Rainbow Stew and JJ Elshere, Quinn, on Arikara.
