Laurence V. Rubottom, age 86 of Philip, S.D., died Friday, June 4, 2010, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Laurence V. Rubottom was born September 3, 1923, in Alliance, Nebr., the son of Vinton and Nellie (Dodd) Rubottom. He graduated at the age of 16. His love of the land began when he was a youngster. He worked for his sister, Maude, and her husband in the summer on their ranch outside Alliance. He also worked for other ranchers in the same area. He also helped his brother, Vernon, at a dairy outside of Alliance.

Colleen Clements, 79, of 200 Clive Drive SW, Cedar Rapids, died June 5, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

She was born February 10, 1931, in Fremont to Cecil and Wilma Cornell Buchholz. She married John Clements January 30, 1950.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School, she lived all of her married life in South Dakota where she retired from the Wall Drug Store in Wall, S.D. She had been a member of St.

"Dr. Coen Klopper was my push to go back to school," said Caroline Fuhrer, a current physicians assistant student at Philip Health Services, Inc. (PHSI).

Fuhrer is receiving hands-on experience during a six-week internship under Klopper's supervision. A student at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, she is enrolled in the School of Health Sciences physician assistant studies program. Fuhrer began at PHSI May 17 and will be working in Philip until June 24.

"Klopper kept telling me that I should be more than a nurse. Now, I am his first student intern.

The Philip City Council began its Monday, June 7, meeting by approving a long list of building permits.

Building and flood plain development permits were approved for Mike and Debbie Clements for a deck and step replacement, and for yard improvement. Nathan Drury plans to replace windows, decks and fence, and do dirt work on a culvert and retaining wall. Dean Fitzgerald plans to replace a fence. Hannah Griffin will remodel and move a current house onto a new basement and add a 40'x32' garage.

Lincoln McIlravy, Olympic bronze medalist and past Iowa wrestling star, was inducted as a distinguished member into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on June 5 in Stillwater, Okla.

"When I was wrestling, I basically stayed focused on my next opponent," said McIlravy. "This honor is something out of your hands. It's a nice finish to my wrestling career."

McIlravy related that Lisa, his wife of almost 17 years whom he met in high school, said this indoctrination was a tremendous honor, a cap to a memorable career.

Ardeth L. Kendall, 80, Rapid City, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at her home.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 28, 2010, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Steve Agan officiating. Burial followed at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Ardeth was born January 18, 1930, at Volunteer, SD, to George and Ruth (Johnson) Hicks. She attended country school and graduated from Belle Fourche High School. She worked in the Montgomery Wards Store in Belle after graduation.

The 2010 Class "B" Girls' and Boys' State Golf Tournament was Monday and Tuesday, May 24-25.

The girl's tournament was played at Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen and the boy's tournament was played at the Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen. Both the boys' and the girls' competitors teed off at 9:00 a.m. on Monday and 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the respective courses.

A total of 55 schools participating in the "B"  tournament.

The Philip Scottie boys' and girls' track and field teams represented their school with honors at the 2010 South Dakota State "B" Track and Field Meet.

The Scottie boys earned first place team placement with a score of 61, beating out Wessington Springs' 53. Other local teams included Wall taking 18th place with 13 points and New Underwood finishing in 25th place with nine points. Philip's Jeff O'Connell was awarded the most valuable player for the State "B" boys.

Karissa Kuhle, a second year student at South Dakota State University, will be doing summer internship work at the Pioneer Review newspaper.

Her first day was Friday, May 28, and she will getting hands-on experience through early August. She is looking forward to "becoming more comfortable with writing and how everything works in the journalism field.

Haakon County will temporarily be without a sheriff as Haakon County Sheriff Larry Hanes officially tendered his resignation to the Haakon County Commission at their meeting, Tuesday, June 1, 2010.

Hanes had informed the board earlier in the year of his intentions to not seek reelection. He did not anticipate the formal resignation until a later date, but a change in state retirement laws required his tendering his resignation prior to July 1, 2010.
