George Daly, age 80, of Midland, SD, died Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip, with Father Ron Garry officiating.

A luncheon will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church directly following the services.

George Henry Daly was born May 31, 1929, in a log cabin south of Philip the oldest of four children born to Maurice and Ethel (Brady) Daly. George spent his school years in Philip and ranched with his parents for two years.

George Thomas "Tom" Hart, age 54 of Brea, CA, formerly of Philip, SD, died March 16, 2010, at his home in Brea after battling cancer for more than 22 years.

Services were held March 27th at Memory Garden Memorial Park and Mortuary in Brea, CA.

A second memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip with Father Tim Hoag as celebrant.

George Thomas "Tom" Hart was born September 29, 1955, the fourth of six children born to George and Ella (Fitch) Hart.

Belva K. Stone, age 58 of Kadoka, SD, died Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 20, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour preceding the services at the church.

Music will be provided by Grace DeVries, pianist. Ushers are Tony Gould and Mike Coller. Pallbearers are Erik, Lee, Kelly, Bobby and Scott Crazybear, Keenan Pickett, Clayton and Tyrell Herbaugh.

Interment will be the Kadoka Cemetery.

The Philip boys' and girls' track teams both took first place honors at the Western Great Plains Conference Meet in Kadoka, Tuesday, May 11.

The boys' team tallied 192, outdistancing Wall by 49 points. The girls' team took first with 140 ponts, 19 points more than second place Wall.

In the boys' division Todd County took third with 107 for third place.

The Philip Scottie boys' golf team placed second at the Regional Golf Tournament Monday, May 17, at Hart Ranch, Rapid City.

The Philip boys shot a combined 291. Caleb Clements took the individual third place with a day's score of 87. Tristen Rush finished seventh with a score of 99. Devon Ehlers earned 10th place with a score of 105. Richie Baye had a score of 125.

The boys team will compete at the State Golf Tournament in Aberdeen, May 24-25.

"We finally had some nice golfing weather with a sunny, warm day, and not 30 mph winds," said Philip coach Doug Hauk.

The Forest "Meza Kapi" Cemetery in Rega, the capital city of Latvia, will be the final resting place for George Mangulis, who dedicated over 50 years of his life to the medical health of Philip area residents.

Mangulis' wife, Rasma Lielmane, will be respectfully honored at the services. She will also be a special guest at the opening of a permanent display destined to be in a future section of the Rega medical museum, the Pauls Stradins Museum of the History of Medicine.

The main guest speaker for the Tuesday, May 11, Philip Chamber of Commerce meeting was Darby Nutter, the head coordinator for the proposed wagon train that will start in Philip, arriving at its destination of Fort Pierre on the 100th anniversary of Scotty Philip's death, June 23, 2011.

Nutter's commitments to the Fort Pierre board of education caused the Philip chamber meeting to be on Tuesday this month, rather than its usual second Monday of each month.

Nutter said the event will be a huge undertaking, "Before, we have limited these to 300 participants.

The United States Department of State held a public meeting in Murdo, May 12, to receive public comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) that has been presented for approval as part of the permit process for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline, which will cross western South Dakota.

The meeting was attended by around 60 people, including local landowners, environmental group activists, nature conservationists and representatives from Trans-Canada, the company proposing the pipeline.

The purpose of the DEIS is to authorize a presidential permit for the pipeline,

Family and friends celebrated Tom and Francis "Vern" McDonnell's 99th birthdays Saturday, May 15, at the Philip Nursing Home.

The McDonnell twins were born May 15, 1911, on their parents' homestead north of Quinn. Dodging the question, Tom said, "Vern says that he can't remember who is older. I know that I came here 99 years ago with nothing, and I still have it."

Vern has been in the Philip nursing home for a few years now.

The Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education has finalized the contract distributions for next school year, except for one.

Jerry Rhodes is retiring as the Philip High School social studies instructor. His position will be filled by Kory Foss, previously from Mobridge, who will also be the head boys' basketball coach and assistant football coach. Danielle Foss will be taking over the teaching responsibilities of Theresa Deuchar at the Milesville rural learning center. Deuchar will be replacing Judy Longbrake as the instructor at the Cheyenne rural learning center.
