The Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education met at 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 18.

The members had begun tours earlier at 4:00 p.m. of the district properties and buildings. After inspecting the Philip buildings and the Milesville rural school, they finished at the Cheyenne rural school and conducted the scheduled monthly public meeting there.

Concerning the district's property, President Bill Slovek reported, "Overall, we are in good shape with our capital budget. We need to keep doing a little (upkeep and improvement) every year.

"We wanted to do it as a kind of fun office event, and to support beef," said Codi Mills concerning the Run Crazy Horse half marathon, marathon, and five person marathon relay held October 3 in the Black Hills.

The workers at the Cattle Business Weekly, a weekly nine-state Philip-based newspaper devoted to the cattle industry, entered the running event. The route took runners from the Crazy Horse Memorial through downtown Hill City and a loop on the Mickelson Trail. For those people really in shape and really into competition, it was a certified race and a Boston Marathon qualifier.

The Philip Lady Scotties traveled to Dupree to challenge the Tigers Saturday, October 2.

After a disheartening home loss to the Lemmon Cowgirls the previous Thursday, the Scotties came back with a vengeance. Not only did the varsity team win 3-0, but the junior varsity won 2-0 and the "C" squad also won 2-1.

The varsity first played two fairly easy games with final scores of 25-14 and 25-20. The Scotties held off a strong come-back try by the Tigers in an extended play game that went to Philip 26-24.

The Philip Lady Scotties volleyball team hosted the Lemmon Cowgirls Thursday, September 30.

The evening was short, with the Philip varsity team losing 0-3. The game scores were 9-25, 23-25 and 13-25.

Setting: Philip - 76 of 78 (7 assists). Leader: Coyle - 63 of 64 (6 assists).

Hitting: Philip - 71 of 87 (12 kills).

The Philip Scotties football team traveled to White River to battle the Tigers Friday, October 1.

The lead changed hands three times. A safety was forced. Philip stuck to it's rushing strategy, and its single attempt at passing was incomplete. White River, on the other hand, gained points on two passes.

The first quarter saw back-and-forth action that resulted in only one touchdown. The Scotties had battled to within nine yards of their goal line.

Up before the dawn Saturday, October 2, the Scotties cross country team loaded themselves and the Wall Eagles onto a bus headed for Highmore to see what kind of power the eastern part of South Dakota had to offer.

Philip seventh grader Tyshia Ferguson took part in the 2,000 meter junior high race. This is her fifth race and the shortest to date. Ferguson placed 26th, covering the course in a time of 11:33.

Sophomore Holly Iwan and freshman Allison Pekron joined 34 competitors on the start line of the 4,000 meter varsity race.

The feather ruffling of a bus ride shared by the Philip Scotties and Wall Eagles to travel to the Hot Spring's golf course turned out to be not only athletically productive for both teams, but strengthened personal relationships inside these rivaling teams.

The hills on the course make the Philip course, which is considered to have too much hill running, for many, to be, well, a baby. There was never relief as this course is all on the side of a small mountain. The only small, fairly flat spot was the start-finish line.

Mike Stoeser, 55, of Hayes, died Thursday, September 30, 2010, as a result of a four-wheeler accident.

Services were held Tuesday, October 5, at St. John's Catholic Church in Ft. Pierre.

Burial was in the Scotty Philip Cemetery, also in Ft. Pierre.

Mike Stoeser was born on April 17, 1955, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre to Alex and Irene(Patton) Stoeser. He grew up on the family farm four miles north of Hayes and attended grade school in Hayes. He attended Stanley County High School and graduated in 1975.

He worked and lived on the family farm his whole life.

The Haakon County Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance, at their October 5, 2010 meeting, that would implement a wheel tax on all licensed vehicles in Haakon County.

The commissioners have been faced with declining revenues in the past few years, having cut the road and bridge fund (highway department) drastically in the past years, and down another $40,000 for the 2011 budget. Funds generated from the wheel tax would bring in an approximate $65,000 each year.

During its October 4 meeting, the Philip City Council approved the second reading of Ordinance #2010-04, 2011 Municipal Appropriations Ordinance, the budget for next year.

The proposed plat of Dakota Mill & Grain was tabled until next meeting to give City Attorney Gay Tollefson time to review those areas and the proposed.

The council will also meet with Tollefson regarding correspondence from Paul Merriman with the State Fire Marshall's Office about propane tank violations in downtown Philip.
