"Originally, there were mixed thoughts in the community about the Matched Bronc Ride. Now it's like it has always been here. Maybe this Scotty Philip Memorial Wagon Train will become the same thing," said out-going Philip Chamber of Commerce President Kent Olson.

The Monday, December 13, meeting of the chamber began with business and much discussion, before the meeting turned to its annual Christmas party.

The chamber officers for 2011 were nominated and voted in.

Roger Duane Holst, age 83, formerly of Midland, Texas, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at Silver Stone Home, Denton, Texas.

He was born on July 23, 1927, in Vale, S.D., to Ernest and Dora (Trigg) Holst.

He married M. Alma (Rose) Holst on June 21, 1951, in Rapid City.

Roger was a veteran of World War II and was enlisted from 1945 to 1946. He was sent from Los Angeles via Hawaii to China where he relieved other Marines who were returning home after the war.

Roger attended Vale High School and graduated in 1945. Later he took advantage of the G.I.

Thomas Franklin "Tom" Delahoyde 72, of Spearfish passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, November 29, 2010.

Funeral sevices were held on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. A memorial has been established to Spearfish Food Pantry and the SD Lion's Club Eye Bank.

Tom was born on August 2, 1938, in Merna, NE. He was the fourth of twelve children, and the first son born to Val and Gertrude (Manning) Delahoyde.

The family resided in Lead, SD. Tom attended all his school years in Lead, graduating in 1956 from LHS.

Clara Hemmingson-Long, age 93 of Philip, S.D., died Saturday, November 27, 2010, at the Philip Nursing Home.

Clara Hemmingson-Long was born Clara Helen Viola Kurth on January 16, 1917, in Philip. Her early days were spent on the Kurth homestead southeast of Philip, where she attended a country school and graduated from the eighth grade. Clara then attended Philip High School and graduated in May of 1935. While attending high school she and her sister also had to ensure the hired hands and thrashing crew were fed each day. So began her long career of cooking.

Jacob A. "Jake" Hall, age 77 of Wasta, S.D., died Sunday, November 28, 2010, at his home in Wasta.

Jacob Hall was born June 18, 1933, by midwife, in the hills of Carter County, Ky., the son of Benjamin and Nora (Davis) Hall. The midwife, who was paid for her help with the delivery with two chickens, didn't get to the courthouse of the rural southern Carter County until August 1, 1933, and thus Jake's birth certificate officially listed his birthday as such.

Norman E. Bierwagen, 87, of Pierre, S.D., passed away, Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at Good Samaritan Center Nursing Care Facility in Sioux Falls.

Services were held Tuesday, November 30, at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre, followed by interment at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

Norman was born on May 11, 1923, in Delmont, S.D., to Walter and Louise (Gerlack) Bierwagen. He was baptized, confirmed and attended church school through the fourth grade at Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont. He completed his education in the Delmont public school system.

The Philip FCCLA chapter is again sponsoring the community Maggie Grace Angel Tree project. The angel tree, decorated with a large variety of angel ornaments, has been set up at the Haakon County Courthouse.

To donate to the project, leave an unwrapped toy, book or new article of clothing under the tree in the courthouse on or before Wednesday, December 15. Gifts are for children ages infant to teenage.

The Philip FCCLA Chapter, in conjunction with the local churches and the Haakon Community Health office, will distribute the donations to children in need in the Philip area.

Michael F. "Mick" Muck, 68, Spearfish, died Thursday, November 18, 2010, at Mid Dakota Hospital in Chamberlain.

Mick was born January 18, 1942, in Sioux Falls to Merle and Mila (Wendt) Muck. He moved to Geddes as a young boy and graduated from Geddes High School.

Mick joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country honorably. Following his discharge he returned to Geddes where he married Shirley Rada on Febuary 8, 1964.

Mick joined the South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks as a conservation officer.

Milton Trask, age 87 of Wall, S.D., died Thursday, November 11, 2010, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Milton was born December 30, 1922, in Wasta, the son of Malcolm and Ruth (Laughlin) Trask. Milton began school when he was five, but ran away. His mother, being a teacher, helped him at home and he started again the next year. Milton went his eight years of grade school near his home on the forks of the Belle and Cheyenne rivers. He enrolled in Cathedral School in Rapid City for his freshman year of high school before transferring to Sturgis, where he graduated in 1940.

Alice Faith Naescher, age 87 of Wall, S.D., died Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at the Golden Living Center Black Hills in Rapid City.

Alice Faith was born the daughter of Walter and Rose (Chapman) Whitcher on August 25, 1923, at the family's home near Creighton, S.D., where she was raised and attended country school through the eighth grade.

She married William A. Naescher in October 1949 and to this union a daughter, Naomi Hope, was born on December 8, 1953.

William and Alice farmed and ranched 10 miles north of Wall until William passed away in 1970.
