James Jerome "Spike" Erdmann

Funeral services for James Jerome (Spike) Erdmann were held Monday, February 1, 2010, at the Mead Baptist Church with the Rev. Kerry Groce officiating.

James Jerome (Spike) Erdmann age 85 was born November 15, 1924, in Webster, SD, to Paul & Ida Erdmann. He passed from this life on January 28, 2010, at his home in Mead, OK.

He graduated from high school in Philip, SD, in 1943 and joined the navy the same year. He spent 20 years in the navy and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1962.

Raymond L. "Ray" Jondro

Ramon L. "Ray" Jondro, age 79 of Rapid City, SD, died Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City.

Ramon Lester "Ray" Jondro was born October 20, 1930, to Archie and Pearl (Amundson) Jondro in Duluth, MN. Ray's youth and early adult life were spent in Duluth. He graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1948, then attended two years of junior college. He worked with his father in the family business at Jondro Motors off and on for several years.

He entered the Navy Reserves in 1947, then joined the Army in 1951 serving in the Korean War.

Betty Lou Fleming

Betty Lou Fleming, age 75 of Custer, SD, died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at Custer Regional Senior Care.

Betty Lou Fleming was born November 3, 1934, in Philip, SD, the daughter of Oliver S. and Myrtle (Neville) Fleming. As a child, she grew up in the Philip area. Because of health reasons at the age of 11, she was hospitalized at the Redfield State Hospital and School in Redfield, SD.

Betty Lou was baptized on April 15, 1984, at Redfield.

Vera Walker-Young

Services were held Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at the Union Center Community Center in Union Center, SD.

Burial was in the Elm Springs Cemetery in Elm Springs, SD.

Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield, SD, was in charge of arrangements.

Vera Elaine Walker-Young was born March 5, 1915, at Delzell, SD, the daughter of David and Lucinda (Miner) Hopkins. She died January 20, 2010, at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall, SD. Vera attained the age of 94 years, 10 months and 15 days.

Vera graduated from high school in Rapid City.

Reuben B. Vollmer

Reuben B. Vollmer, age 82 of Midland, SD, died Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Reuben Vollmer was born in 1927 on the family homestead in rural Mellette County near White River, SD. He graduated from the eighth grade from a county school located on the White River.

He married Iris Krogman on September 5, 1948, at Murdo. He lived in Mellette County, Murdo, rural White Lake, Midland, Philip and Philip Nursing Home.

Natalie Foster

Natalie Foster, age 84 of Wall, SD, died January 21, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.

Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Friday.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 29, at the First Lutheran Church in Wall, with Pastor Curtis Garland officiating.

Music was provided by Gene, Dean, Dale and Gale Patterson.

JoAnne (Burns) Boyle

JoAnne (Burns) Boyle was born in Philip, SD, on April 26, 1930, to Harry Burns and Bessie (Harvey) Burns. JoAnne was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and treasured friend.

Jerry Willuweit

Jerry Willuweit, age 66 of Quinn, South Dakota, died January 14, 2010, at the Hospice House in Rapid City.

Survivors include a daughter Jami Moon and her husband JT of Quinn; one son Will Willuweit of Quinn; two granddaughters; one brother Jim Willuweit of Creighton; one sister Connie Keil of Black Hawk; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, with a vigil service and time of sharing at 7:00 p.m., all at the Wall High School.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m.

Kay Berkemeier

Kay Berkemeier, age 62 of Quinn, South Dakota, died January 2, 2010, at her home in Quinn.

Survivors include her sister Diana Sue "Suzi" Pesicka and her husband Richard of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two nephews Conor and Cade Pesicka of Colorado Springs; and an aunt Pat Hassettt of Cupertino, California.

Funeral services are pending.

Scottie wrestlers take second at Lyman

Dace Kelly, 119 lbs., fifth place

The Philip Area Scotties wrestling team earned second place at the MidDakota Monster Wrestling Tournament in Presho, Friday and Saturday, January 8 and 9.

Hot Springs won the tourney with 255.5 points, Philip earned 219.5 points, and Lyman County took third with 166 points.

Philip had three champions, 103 pounder Lane Blasius, 145 pounder Blake Lobdell and 171 pounder Troy Guptill. There were two second placers, Clint Nelson at 189 pounds. and Karch Foley at 215. Bodhi Lytle, in the 160 pound division, placed third. Ross Julson, in the 152 pound division, earned fourth place.
