June Janice "Jan" Lytle O'Rourke, 73, Interior, died Saturday, September 11, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Jan was born June 20, 1937, the fourth daughter of Donald Lytle and Zohy (Amiotte) Lytle. She was born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and raised in rural Washabaugh County near Bear Creek. She attended grade school at Lone Tree Country School and Interior Elementary and Interior High School. 

  Jan and Lyle O'Rourke were married August 28, 1954, in Miles City, Montana. They ranched their entire married life in the rural community of Interior.

Long-time Alaska pioneer, loving husband and father, LeRoy D. Dennis, known to friends and family as LDD, passed away on September 4, 2010, at home after long battle with cancer.

LeRoy was born October 11, 1930, in Midland, S.D., one of 11 children to Henry Dennis and Hope (Baker) Dennis.

He served in the U.S. Army, joining on April 26, 1950. He received CIB, Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, with six Bronze Stars, and President Unit Citation.

Funeral services were held August 31, 2010, for Adam Armando Mackintosh, 34, of Denver, Colo., who died Wednesday, August 25th in a tragic accident. Although taken too soon, he lived his life to the fullest and leaves us with laughter, and his memory will shine through the legacy he's left behind.

Adam loved nature from birth and treasured anything that involved the outdoors. Camping, fishing, sailing; or just spending time in the backyard with family and friends.

Leonard W. Carlson, age 88, of Kadoka, S.D., died Monday, September 13, 2010, at his residence in Kadoka, following an illness that had only slowed him down for a very short time.

Leonard was born to Charles F. and Esther (Johnson) Carlson on June 23, 1922, on the homestead at Indian Creek.

John B. Fetter. age 74 of Kadoka, S.D., died Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the VA Medical Center in Ft. Meade, surrounded by family and friends.

John B. Fetter was born April 10, 1936, in Martin, S.D., the son of Orvill and Bernece (Kimball) Fetter. He grew up 20 miles northeast of Martin on his parents' farm-ranch, attending Patricia School in that area.

John enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 4, 1954. After his training, he was stationed in France where he worked with an engineering group, maintaining and building roads. He was honorably discharged on June 3, 1956.

Floriene Louise Schwlam was born July 14, 1921 in Ft. Pierre, S.D., at the Florence Book home, to John Rhoades and Belle (Fugate) Rhoades of Ft. Pierre, S.D.

Floriene was raised on the family Ranch located on Mission Ridge in Ft Pierre with three brothers and one sister. She attended country school and graduated from Pierre High School where she met Frank Schwalm. During high school, she cleaned and cooked at a boarding house, she also cleaned the home of Dr. Jaden and his wife. She worked at the Red Owl Grocery until she and Frank married on February 5, 1943, in Ft. Pierre.

With near perfect weather conditions and a familar setting in Faith's golf course near Durkee Lake, and a small but talented field of competitors, the Philip Scottie cross country team began its second 2010 competition.

Faith began with the grade school mile. Philip third grader Josie Rush tried her hand at distance running for the first time, and ran a very respectable 6:53 to place fourth among the girls and 10th among all the 22 grade school runners.

Faith ended its day with a 200 meter fun run.

The Philip High School varsity football team traveled to Murdo Friday, September 3, for its first football game of the 2010 season. The Scotties returned with a 50-6 win over the Jones County Coyotes.

Philip balanced out the four quarters, beginning with a 29-yard rush by Tucker McDaniel for the game's first touchdown. Travis Nelson carried in the two-point conversion.

The 2010-2011 season opener volleyball match for the Philip Lady Scotties was a win over the Kadoka Lady Kougars.

The Thursday, September 2, home varsity match was won by Philip 3-1. The game scores were 25-22, 25-16, 20-25 and 25-14.

Martha Olson Hill, age 87 of Byromville, Georgia, passed away Friday, July 2, 2010, at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.

She was born Martha Lucille Olson on September 12, 1922, and raised on a cattle farm near Grindstone, a small prairie village in South Dakota. She was the youngest of five children and she was the final survivor.

Martha graduated from Philip High School in 1940. She attended the Black Hills State College in Spearfish and taught in a rural school for one year.
