Memorial services will be held for James E. Rumney, Jr. of Hot Springs, SD, on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Mueller Civic Center Theater with John Davis officiating. Jim died at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City, SD, on March 23, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jim was born May 29, 1939, to James Edward Rumney, Sr., a/k/a Eddie and Gladys (Black) Rumney.

He began life on the family ranch 45 miles north of Lusk, WY. The ranch was located on Lance Creek just above where it joined the Cheyenne River.

Seven candidates are running for two at-large seats on the Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education. The election will be Tuesday, April 14. Five questions have been given to the candidates. Their answers will be printed in successive issues of the Pioneer Review.

Dr. Joseph Wyatt, an urologist from Pierre, has begun his monthly visits to the Philip Health Services Inc. clinic and hospital.

Wednesday, March 25, was his first day, with future scheduled visitations on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Currently, Wyatt will be taking appointments and seeing patients from 9:00 a.m. to noon, "or longer as needed," said Wyatt. "I'll stay until there are no more patients to be seen for the day." The scheduled hours may increase in the future, if warranted.

When the recently passed South Dakota smoke free law takes effect July 1, it will still be legal to smoke outdoors, such as walking down Main Street. The law covers all public workplaces with the exception of existing cigar bars, smoke shops and lodging rooms such as motels, which may designate smoking rooms.

According to the South Dakota State Medical Association, recent statistics show that only about 20 percent of South Dakotans smoke.

The Rock 'N Roll Lanes bowling alley at the north side of Philip was broken into and robbed in the early hours of Saturday, March 21.

Using a tool such as a crowbar, a person, or persons, destroyed the lock and brace to the southwest steel door to gain entry.

Four video lottery machines were then forced open and emptied of the money inside. The machines' tickets, which automatically register whenever the machines are opened, indicated the exact times of 3:23, 3:24, 3:24 and 3:25 a.m.

Two people, Greg Arthur and Trisha Larson, are running for one open seat on the Philip City Council. The Tuesday, April 14, election will determine who will fill the two-year term for Ward III. Five questions have been given to be answered by each candidate.

Why are you running for the city council at this

particular time?

Larson: "When my husband, Ron, and I moved back to Philip to be close to our families, we knew it would take commitment to the community to help make it the best it can be, with an even brighter future, for our children.
