Seven candidates for Haakon District Board of Education

Seven candidates are running for two at-large seats on the Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education. The election will be Tuesday, April 14.

Five questions have been given to each candidate. Before the election, their answers will be printed in successive issues of the Pioneer Review.

Question #2. What do you feel is the most important issue before the board of education at this time?

Jodi Kammerer: "I think the number one issue facing the school board right now is accountability.

Albert "Sunny" Osborne

Albert "Sunny" Osborne, age 67, of Quinn, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his daughter, Deirdra Lynn Osborne of Salt Lake City, Utah; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, George Osborne and his wife, Maureen, of Allen, Texas; one sister, Penny Baumann and her husband, Dale, of Quinn; and a host of other relatives and friends.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements were with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall.


Erma Gabriel

Erma Gabriel, age 92 of Creighton, SD, peacefully went to heaven, Sunday, March 15, 2009, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, with her daughter and dear friends by her side.

Visitation will be held 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and two hours preceding the services on Thursday.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the Community Center in Wall, with Rev.

George Turpen

George Leroy Turpen, 83, Minot, ND, formerly of Black Hawk, SD, died Thursday, March 5, 2009 in a Minot nursing home.

George was born August 17, 1925, in Belle Fourche, SD. He was one of five children born to Emil and Florence (Schipke) Turpen. They enjoyed growing up in Nisland. He attended high school in Rapid City and graduated in 1943.

Following graduation he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific. Towards the end of World War II, he married Delores Briggs in Rapid City on November 15, 1945.

Kelly Sowder

Mass of Christian Burial for Kelly Sowder will be held at 9:00 a.m., Friday, March 6, 2009, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Father Cliff Jacobson officiating.

Rite of Committal followed in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.

Kelly Sowder, age 30, of Gillette, WY, died on Monday, March 2, 2009, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY, due to injuries received in an automobile accident.

Kelly Marie Sowder was born to Orrin and Cheryl (Limbo) Carstensen in Philip, SD, on February 24, 1979. At the age of two, her family moved to Gillette, WY.

Marjorie Kodet

Marjorie Kodet, age 92 of Belvidere, SD, died March 8, 2009, at the Philip Nursing Home.

Marjorie J. Kodet (nee: Barton, Lueck) was born January 3, 1917, in Schoharie, NY. She grew up in Aberdeen, SD, and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1934. She attended Northern Normal College in Aberdeen and received her bachelor's degree in 1938 with majors in English and business as well as two minors. After graduation, she accepted a teaching position in Belvidere, SD, at Belvidere High School.

Marlene J. Brown

Marlene J. Brown, age 70 of Rapid City, formerly of Wall, died March 3, 2009, at her home in Rapid City, surrounded by her family and friends.

Marlene J. VanVleck was born July 13, 1938, in Wall, SD, the daughter of Gilbert "Skinny" and Pearl B. (Harden) VanVleck. She grew up and received her education in Wall, graduating from Wall High School in 1956.

Marlene was united in marriage to Jack Brown on September 23, 1957 in Wall. To this union were born five children, Valerie, Melanie, Stacy, Lori and Jason.
