Lady Scotties end season in 2nd round of districts, hard 2-3 loss to Edgemont

The district volleyball match in Wall between the Philip Lady Scotties and the Edgemont Moguls began with a close set, and stayed close throughout.

After Philip completed its regular volleyball season with a 25-7 record, the Lady Scotties entered district play Tuesday, November 3, against the Rapid City Christian Comets. The match was almost too easy of a win for the Philip team, which kept the Comets in single digit numbers in all three sets.

The next match, Thursday, November 6, was a different story. Actually scoring more points in the match, Philip lost 2-3.

PHS Student Council at region workshop

The Philip High School student council attended the region workshop at the Sturgis Community Center on Wednesday, November 4, after its postponement from Thursday, October 29, due to poor weather.

Members in attendance were seniors: Marissa Mann, Kenzy Pinney, Troy Guptill, Colin Van Lint, Kelsey Hostutler, Colby Smith and Karch Foley; juniors: PHS Student Council President and Rushmore Region Vice President Tawnie DeJong, Region Parliamentarian Tomilyn Trask, Jeff O'Connell, Jordan Hauk and Abby Carley; sophomores: Josie Guptill, Sayde Slovek, Trey

John Buchholz

John Buchholz was born May 23, 1957, in Philip to Ramona and Kenneth Buchholz.

He passed away August 23, 2009.

He was raised on the family farm northeast of Philip. He attended eight years of country school and two and one-half years at Philip High School.

He worked at the elevator in Kadoka and from there moved to Denver where he met his wife, Raynae Rivar. To this union two children were born, Cory James and Alisha Nicole. While in Denver, he worked in an iron mine, NA Empire. Later he moved to Pennsylvania, then to Wisconsin, then back to Denver.

Joan Prichard

Joan Prichard, age 76 of Rapid City, formerly of Kadoka, SD, died Saturday, November 7, 2009, at the Golden Living Center Bella Vista in Rapid City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the auditorium on Friday.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 13, at the Kadoka City Auditorium, with Pastor Jim Sorum and Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Music will be provided by Joyce Wheeler and Lyndy Ireland.

Local blood drive November 17

Local residents have the opportunity to celebrate life by joining in the community blood drive from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, at the Philip High School Fine Arts Building.

Not only will people get that great feeling of giving after donating blood, but will also be able to check their total cholesterol level. United Blood Services offers free cholesterol testing to blood donors. UBS does a total cholesterol test that allows donors to eat before the test, no fasting is required.

Physicians assistant Terry Henrie reaches five years at Philip Health Service, Inc.

On September 18, 2009, physician assistant Terry Henrie reached an important milestone: five years of employment at Philip Health Services, Inc.

"We are pleased that Terry has demonstrated such commitment to our facility and to our community," said Kent Olson, administrator of Philip Health Services. "He has become an integral member of our medical staff."

Five years ago, Henrie joined a health provider team that included Dr. George Mangulis, Dr. Coen Klopper, Dr. David Holman, and certified nurse practitioner Robin Peterson-Lund.

Chamber's website tops list of goals

The Philip Chamber of Commerce is closer to initiating a new website.

Marie Slovek, the designer and updating coordinator for the Haakon School District website, addressed the chamber during its Monday, November 9, meeting.
