The Philip Scotties basketball team hosted the Edgemont Moguls on Friday, January 2.

Philip captured the lead in the first quarter and expanded it throughout the game. They won with a final score of 68-39. The Scotties were forcing a slower paced game. Almost half of their field goal attempts were good, with a great effort being used to get the ball almost under the basket for most of the shots.

Philip hosted the Edgemont Moguls girls' basketball team on Friday, January 2. The win of 53-46 went to the Lady Scotties after they held on to the lead for the entire second half. Four Philip girls finished with double digit scores and the team almost doubled their opponents in rebounding.

The first two minutes of the games remained scoreless. Sinking the first basket, Edgemont took the lead and held it the rest of the first quarter.

The Philip Scottie wrestling team hosted a dual meet with Rapid City Central on January 2.

Philip, a "B" size school, held its own against "A"-sized Central. The day's final score was Philip - 16, Central - 41.

112 lbs. - Dace Kelly decision over Evan Wyler, 8-5.

119 lbs. - Travis Nelson decisioned by Aaron Hamo, 4-5.

125 lbs. - Jesse Williams decisioned by C.J. Clark, 4-11.

130 lbs. - Tanner Radway pinned by Fellen Lowe, 3:34.

The Philip area United Blood Services blood drive is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the Bad River Senior Citizen's Center.

Out of every 100 people needing blood, more than 50 percent will use type O. "That is the reason we are trying to sign up more O-positive and O-negative donors for our upcoming drive," said Tami Ravellette, coordinator for the event.

Thirty-seven percent of the population has O-positive blood, making it the most common type.

Philip Pearson

Philip Pearson was nominated for his involvement and dedication to numerous fraternal organizations in Philip. Pearson is the son of the late Pere and Martha Pearson. He was raised 18 miles northwest of Philip, along

with his two younger brothers. He attended grade school at Elbon School and graduated from Philip High School. During his high school years, Philip joined the National Guard and served for 20 years. In 1974, he married Cheryl Long. They have four children, Karolina, Jeremiah, Per and Leroy. They also have four grandchildren.

The Philip City Council used its Monday, January 5, meeting to get through annual paperwork before discussing possible solutions to the Lake Waggoner problem.

All rates and fees for the City of Philip will be the same as in 2008. All penalties, fines and fees will also be the same. The council again adopted an anti-discrimination resolution. The official depository for the city is again the First National Bank in Philip. The official newspaper for the city is the Pioneer Review. Paid holidays for city employees will be the same as last year.

The Philip City Council put a wrap on 2008 and started looking into 2009 at their year-end meeting, Tuesday, December 30.

The council finished out 2008 by approving all submitted outstanding bills and previous meeting minutes. Philip Public Works Director Tom Lesselyoung said all the no parking signs have been installed. The council approved the second reading of Ordinance #2008-14 that amends building permit expirations.

Joe Gittings, First National Agency, addressed the council in regards to the city's insurance.

Several county offices had budget over-runs and the Haakon County Board of Commissioners held a special meeting on Wednesday, December 31, to approve severalcontingency transfers, that totalled $63,294.83, to cover the shortages.

The accounts and their over-run amounts are mentally ill, $395.97; jail, $13,530.98; sheriff, $5,650.38; election, $4,657.46; auditor, $7,719.07; director of equalization, $2,969.38; and courthouse building, $28,371.59 for a total of $63,294.83. The contingency fund had $75,000 in which to use for this purpose.
