The Philip Scottie team traveled to Presho to compete in the Lyman "Mid-Dakota Monster" Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday, January 9 and 10.

The tournament's championship team was Hot Springs, ranked number nine in Class A. Philip, ranked number five in Class B, took second place at the tournament. Tyler Frost of Gettysburg, the 103-pound champion, was tournament MVP.

"The Mid-Dakota Monster ran as smoothly as I thought it could," said coach Chad Johnson of Lyman.

The Philip Scotties fell to the Jones County Coyotes 41-66 on Friday, January 9, in Murdo during a Western Great Plains Conference basketball game.

Casey Cvach led Philip with 16 points. Philip hit 46 percent (16 of 35) from the field. Philip is now at 1-4 so far this season.

Andrew Bork scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Jones County. Jon Drayer added 14 points and Kyle Venard netted 10 points. Jones County is at 6-2.

The Philip Scottie boys' basketball team traveled to the White River Classic tournament on Saturday, January 10, to go against Lower Brule.

Philip just could not keep up and concluded the game 64-77 in favor of Lower Brule.

Casey Cvach led the Scotties with 18 points. Jeff O'Connell earned 14 points and Caleb Clements scored 12 for the Scotties. Philip's season score now stands at 1-5.

Joseph Skunk scored a game-high 27 points.

The Philip High School girls' basketball team traveled to Dupree on Saturday, January 10 to challenge the Tigers. The Scotties came home easy winners with a final score of 51-28.

Philip secured the lead in the first quarter with 16 points and holding the Tigers to just five points. By half-time, Philip's score quadrupled Dupree's. The Scottie team used the second half to give court experience to many of its next year's starters.

The Philip Lady Scotties basketball team hosted the New Underwood Tigers on Thursday, January 8. Philip defeated New Underwood 43-27 in a Western Great Plains Conference girls basketball game.

The scoring began sluggishly and Philip held New Underwood to single digit scoring in each of the four quarters. The Tigers made the game's first five points, but needed five minutes of play to do it. The first quarter ended with the low score of 6-9. Philip's Sierra Hook started the second quarter with a quick basket within the first eight seconds.

The Golden West Telecommunications' Board of Directors recently approved the 10th year of funding scholarships for college-bound high school seniors.

The laboratory department of Philip Health Services, Inc. has not only passed its semi-annual mandatory Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIP) inspection, but passed with 100 percent compliance.

Connie Sandstrom, the lab manager and one of the technicians, said, "Our lab at PHSI performs about 4,000 tests per month. Depending on what tests are being done, the average turn around time from when ordered by a physician until the results are in his hand is around 35 minutes.

Two new men were sworn in as members of the Haakon County Board of Commissioners at their January 6, 2009, meeting.

Nick Konst, Philip, replaced Mel Smith and Gary Snook, Midland, took over Lawrence Schofield's seat. Konst defeated Smith in the June primary election. Schofield had opted to step down and Snook ran unopposed for the position. Rita O'Connell was voted in as chairman and Neal Brunskill as vice chairman.

Marlene Knutson, director of the Central South Dakota Enhancement District, introduced new employee, Seth Hyberger, to the board.

Marjorie Angela Eggen, 94, of Lebanon, OR, passed away December 27, 2008, at Lebanon Care Center.

She was born in Grindstone, SD, to Oliver and Martha (Wold) Olson on February 10, 1914.

Marjorie grew up in rural South Dakota. After graduating from high school in Pierre, SD, she attended college and earned a teaching degree. She worked as an elementary school teacher in country schools for 10 years.

She moved to California and married John E. Eggen on August 30, 1941, in Los Angeles. They left California in 1945 and settled in Lebanon.

Richard "Rick" Hartwig, 55, Mitchell, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell after a long term illness. Memorial services will be at a later date in Independence, MO. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, MO. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Richard Leland Hartwig was born September 21, 1953 at Marshall, MO, to George and Jacqueline (Gaut) Hartwig. He grew up in the Marshall and Independence area and graduated from Young High School in Independence in 1972.
