The 33rd annual Rodeo Bible Camp was held at the Kadoka Rodeo Arena on August 3-6.

The Haakon County commissioners met Tuesday, August 4, to discuss budgets, new computers and weed control.  

The board approved the meeting minutes of last month's meeting. The board also approved the May 5, gross salary and payroll warrants. "For some reason they didn't change on the May payroll and I need to get them changed. They are very close to what they were before," said Patsy Freeman, county auditor. 

All the commissioners except Gary Snook approved Virgil Smith's request for a new computer.

After reviewing the last meeting's minutes and hearing the treasurer's report, the attending members of the Philip Chamber of Commerce received the final update on the Philip Festival Days.

"Tons of people came into town," said treasurer Matt Reedy, "Over $1,177 profit was made after everything was paid out. All in all, that is super. We understand that it doesn't matter if the chamber itself made any money, but we made about $1,300 just on the burger feed."

Chamber members voiced concerns over the congested traffic and parking for the bronc ride event.

"Basically, I struck up the business because there was a need in town. People were paying more than I thought they should for computer repair and service," said Ron Larson, owner and operator of Hometown Computer Services out of Philip.

Starting in April, Larson has been acquiring more and more work and satisfied customers. "I pretty much know up front what I can and can't handle when it comes to computer problems, and I'll admit that before I start any job," said Larson.

Bonnie J. O'Day, 80 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2009, at her home.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 5, at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Rev. Nicholas Landsberger officiating.

Burial was in the Pierre Cemetery in Pierre, SD.

Bonnie was born September 26, 1928, in Ft. Pierre, SD, to Henry and Bernice Koch. The family moved a lot when Bonnie was growing up and she attended nine different schools by the 10th grade.

It was a tough decision by the Philip City Council at their meeting Monday, August 3, but the cost of propane to heat the pool was the determining factor in their decision not to accept the gift of a pool heater from the Haakon County Young Women.

Carol Schofield stated a salesman from The Pool and Spa Center in Rapid City had looked at the Philip pool facility. She noted he said there was room for a heating system in the building.

HCYW said they would purchase the $4,000 heater and pay the $1,000 for installation, if the city would pay for the rest.

The Haakon/Jackson County Fair was held at the fairgrounds in Philip, July 30 to August 1 with a full slate of activities for young and old.

Nearly 100 4-H members, and 25 non-4-H youth and adults from the two counties brought their hard work to the Legion Hall in Philip Thursday afternoon.

Friday afternoon the 4-H Junior Leaders hosted a barnyard olympics for all ages. Those 10 and under hunted for animals and made the correct animal sound when they spotted what they were seeking. They also had some fun with balloons.

Jack Gravatt, age 86, of Elm Springs, SD, died July 27, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.

Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall, and one hour preceding the services on Friday.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m.

Myrna 0. Coyle, 95, a well known local educator and artist, died July 25, 2009, at The Summit At Westlake Hills Retirement Community in Austin, TX.

Myrna, a long time resident of Rapid City, relocated to Austin, TX, in 2008.

Myrna was born to David and Beulah Carpenter at Fedora, SD, on December 29,1913. She attended both rural and town schools at Fedora graduating from high school there in 1931. She attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion and Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell where she received her South Dakota State Teaching Certificate.

Elva Hindman, age 91 of New Underwood, SD, formerly of Wall, died July 27, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.

Closed casket visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, at the United Methodist Church in Wall with Pastor Sheri Fadley officiating.

Music will be provided by Dorothy Shearer, pianist, and Ryan Richards, vocalist. Eulogy will be given by Joe Crawford.
