Odeen "Skee" Rasmussen, 85, died on Saturday, October 24, 2009, after a prolonged illness at Hans Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, SD.

He was born at the family farm near Beresford, SD, to August and Martha (Engle) Rasmussen.

He attended Pioneer School, Beresford High School and South Dakota State University, where he received a bachelor of science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1951.

He married Jan Berry on November 4, 1951, in Pierre, SD.

Melvin Lambert, age 82 of Centerville, SD, formerly of Wall, died Monday, October 26, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, at the United Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Sheri Fadley officiating.

Music will be provided by Carol Hahn, pianist, and Lucille Holsether, vocalist. Ushers are Jerry Johannesen and Bill Leonard. Pallbearers are Adam, Luke, Tim and Todd Lambert, Clint and Lenny Lester.

Interment will be held at a later date at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Plainview, NE.

The Philip Scotties traveled west to face the best teams in the Black Hills area on an extremely challenging mile high Tomahawk Golf Course for the Lead Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday, September 29.

Holly Iwan again set the pace for the Lady Scotties as a field of 41 runners climbed the west side of Strawberry Hill. Kaeley Fenhaus, running second for Philip, though still learning race strategies of cross country, let the first uphill quarter mile intimidate her. She topped the hill in 30th place.

The Philip Scotties cross country team could have picked no better day than Saturday, October 3, to challenge many of East River's best runners.

With a light mist, cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 40s, many Scotties would again set personal coarse best times, while seeing just how they stack up against an extremely fast field, including the reigning boys' and girls' "B" division state champions.

In the girls' 4,000 meter varsity race, Holly Iwan lead her team out, testing her strength as this season nears its close.

For its homecoming football game on Friday, October 2, Philip hosted the White River Tigers. The Scotties won 54-6.

Neither team scored in the first quarter, though with only 32 seconds remaining, Philip punted to the 28 yard line, forced a fumble and recovered the ball. Within seconds of start of the second quarter, Philip's Jeff O'Connell ran in a Brandon O'Dea pass for the touchdown. Karch Foley rushed in the extra point conversion and the score was 8-0.

Not able to complete their drive, the Tigers punted to the Philip eight yard line.

Traveling to Lemmon on Thursday, October 1, the Lady Scotties earned a shut-out win over the Cowgirls 3-0. The set scores were 25-21, 25-22, 25-17. Philip varsity now has a season record of 14-5.

The Philip Lady Scotties hosted the Dupree Tigers volleyball team on Saturday, October 3. The Philip varsity won 3-0, with set scores of 25-12, 25-6 and 25-21. Their season record currently stands at 15-5.

Serving: Philip - 68 of 74 (18 aces). Leaders: Chana Gottsleben - 18 of 18 (5 aces), Molly Coyle - 13 of 14 (4 aces), Kady Pinney - 14 of 16 (5 aces).

Vivian Hamar, age 82 of Long Valley, South Dakota, died October 5, 2009, at her home in Long Valley.

Vivian Delores Huisman was born April 30, 1927, in South Sioux City, Nebraska, the daughter of Thomas Andrew and Margaret (Daniels) Huisman. She grew up in South Sioux City and graduated from high school in 1945. She was a member of the National Honor Society in high school.

Shirley Anderson, age 94 of Kadoka, South Dakota , died October 6, 2009, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Shirley J. Buum was born March 1, 1915, at White River, South Dakota, the daughter of Christian and Sophia (Wegner) Buum. She grew up and received her education in White River. Shirley married Clifford Larson in 1943, and to this union three children were born. They made their home in Wood, South Dakota.

Shirley married Alfred G. Anderson in 1965. They resided in Wood, Rapid City and Kadoka. They enjoyed restoring antique furniture until their retirement.

After 26 years of traveling the United States, by horse-drawn wagon, Ron McGilvery, is thinking of settling down.

Raised in Gettysburg, SD, he is friends with Sonny LaBeau, and comes through Philip every so often to renew the friendship. "He came through in '95, then 2004, I believe, and now," said LaBeau. "In Gettysburg, he had a '53 Mercury with straight pipes, which got him into a little trouble back then.
