With a 6-2 season record, the number three seeded Philip Scottie football team traveled to Herreid to challenge the number two seeded Herreid-Selby Area Wolverines.

The Tuesday, October 27, Region 4 Class 9AA game started fast, with Wolverines' Tanner Sjomeling finishing a drive by carrying the ball in the last two yards for a touchdown. Teammate Jon Schlomer made good the two-point conversion for a 8-0 lead.

A display of Christmas trees and wreaths decorated by organizations, groups and indiviudals will be spread out around Philip's downtown this Christmas season.

The annual Parade of Trees at the Haakon County Courthouse had to be put on hold for this Christmas season due to ongoing plumbing renonvations. The loss of the Parade of Trees sparked a group of citizens to organize a downtown display, for this season only.

The annual meeting of the West River/Lyman-Jones Rural Water Systems was held in Philip on Wednesday, October 28, in the Fine Arts Building.

After a roast beef supper, a welcome was given by Philip Mayor John Hart. WR/L-J Manager Jake Fitzgerald introduced the WR/L-J board of directors, staff, consultants and special guests. Wall's Mayor Dave Hahn gladly reported that Wall has now been hooked up to the Mni Wiconi Rural Water Supply Project and its Missouri River water for several months.

The WR/L-J annual president's report was made by Paul Goldhammer, Wall.

The Monday, November 2, meeting of the Philip City Council saw finances and construction as the main points of business.

A request from Brad Wilson with Insurance Benefits, Inc. regarding a change of agents for the city's airport liability insurance was denied. Mayor John Hart said, "Everything else being equal between the First National Agency and the Insurance Benefits, Inc. plans, I don't wish to take the money out of the local community."

Work on the School Drainage Project has been completed, but the payment for it is still in litigation.

The 34th annual Girls and 64th annual Boys State Cross Country Meet was held at the Elks Golf Course, Rapid City, on Saturday October 24. Qualifying to run at state were 355 girls and 357 boys.

Medals were presented to the first 25 individual places in each class and to the top four teams in each class. All boy's classes ran 5,000 meters (3.11 miles), while all girl's classes ran 4,000 meters (2.49 miles).

This year's Scottie cross country team compiled over 3,300 miles en route to this year's state championships.

On Thursday, October 22, the Philip Scotties traveled to Kadoka to challenge the Kougars in the last game of their regular high school football season. Philip ended the game in the third quarter with the 50-point rule when the score reached 50-0.

"Overall the performance of the Scotties was excellent," said Philip coach Keven Morehart.

Monday, October 26, brought Parents Night to the Philip High School armory, where the Lady Scotties took on the New Underwood Tigers. Philip won the varsity match 3-0, with set scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-15. Philip's season record is now 26-6.

With Philip's junior varsity and "C" squad also sweeping their opponents, the Scotties did not lose a single set during the evening.

In recognition of breast cancer awareness, the evening competition was called a "Dig It Pink" volleyball match.

Christine Nadala arrived in Philip from Dipolog City, Mindanao Island, Philippines, on Friday, October 16, to begin a three-year commitment to work as a nurse at Philip Health Services, Inc. Her first day on the job was October 20.

Nadala is the third person to join PHSI under the H1-B visa program. Melanie Tezon-Berdin, a lab technician, has been in Philip since July, 2007. Dennis Donato, a nurse, has been living and working in Philip since January, 2009. Under a similar program, Dr. George Mangulis came from Latvia in 1947 to dedicate over 50 years to health care in the Philip area.

Nine FFA chapter members represented Philip at the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, October 20-24.

The marketing plan team of Mick Trask, Carissa Doolittle and Caleb Clements took first place in their division area. They competed against 32 teams representing 31 states and Puerto Rico. After making it into the semi-finals of 16 remaining teams, Philip became one of the last four finalists: South Dakota, California, New Mexico and Kentucky.

KinderCottage child care, under the management of Kerry Burns with assistance from Jenny Terkildsen, unofficially opened Monday, August 17.

Ten children are currently enrolled: two first graders, three pre-schoolers, four toddlers and one infant. There is a waiting list, but Burns and Terkildsen are waiting to accept more children until after the backyard playground equipment is installed and a front yard picket fence is put in.
