Philip's annual Invitational Wrestling Tournament "Wrestle Mania" on January 16 and 17 ended with Rapid City Central taking first place and Philip earning second place out of 14 schools.

This is the sixth year that Central, an "AA" school, has claimed top honors, and the third consecutive year that Philip, a "B"-sized school, has taken second place.

Rapid City Central (RCC) won with 273 points.

Virginia D. Simmons, age 81 of New Underwood, SD, died January 14, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.

Services were held on Saturday, January 17, at the Prairie Baptist Church in New Underwood, with Pastor Jim Harbert and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.

Music was provided by Marti Aus, pianist, and Alma Crosbie and Alice Richter, vocalists. Ushers were Doug Gimpel and Tom Watson.

Clifford Porter Cadman, 73, of Casa Grande died Jan. 15, 2009 at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, surrounded by his family.

The funeral was held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20 at J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel.

Mr. Cadman was born Jan. 28, 1935 in Philip, SD, and was a son of Percy and Lucille Cadman. He was a self-employed rancher and farmer from 1968 to 1993 at Highmore, SD. He enjoyed his work and rodeos, dancing and children.

The Monday, January 19, Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education meeting began with two guest speakers.

South Dakota Highway Patrolman Jason Hamar and Haakon County Deputy Sheriff Mark Foley updated the board on the upcoming Drug and Alcohol Awareness Day. This year, the day-long activity for high school freshmen will be in Kadoka on April 29.

Two years ago the annual safety presentation included grades nine through 12.

Dr. Eric Gross said, "It used to be that the medical specialty was ear, nose and throat, but now it involves pretty much the entire head and neck."

Gross will be seeing patients at Philip Health Services, Inc. from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month.

The medical specialty is expansive enough that Gross's supervisor encouraged Gross to regularly visit Philip. Bob Scarlett, administrator for three medical clinics in Rapid City, said that there are, "a good number of ear, nose and throat patients from the Philip area.

The duly elected Haakon County State's Attorney Gay Tollefson, was sworn into office on January 5 by Haakon County Auditor Patsy Freeman.

The four-year term will involve the defense of state laws and the defense of Haakon County in legal cases. Tollefson is also doing the state's attorney work for Bennett County, which must contract for someone to do work since no one would run for the office in that county.

She used to be a lobbyist for the South Dakota Water Congress, an umbrella organization for 21 various water interests.

Fellow principals have nominated and voted in Philip Secondary Principal Jeff Rieckman as Region VI Principal of the Year.

The South Dakota Association of Secondary School Principals (SDASSP) has seven regions in the state. Philip High School is in region six. When the association holds its annual meeting in March, it will announce which of the seven regional Principals of the Year will be named as South Dakota Principal of the Year.

Rieckman and his wife, Lori, have been in Philip since the beginning of the 2002-03 school year.

Animals as Architects is a hands-on exhibit exploring science, literature and art. It is currently on display at the Haakon County Public Library until January 30.

The 15 activities, free for the Philip area public, would normally cost $500 for the library for a month's usage. A grant applied for by the library covers half of the charge, and the Friends of the Library has provided the other half.

The Philip Scottie team traveled to Presho to compete in the Lyman "Mid-Dakota Monster" Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday, January 9 and 10.

The tournament's championship team was Hot Springs, ranked number nine in Class A. Philip, ranked number five in Class B, took second place at the tournament. Tyler Frost of Gettysburg, the 103-pound champion, was tournament MVP.

"The Mid-Dakota Monster ran as smoothly as I thought it could," said coach Chad Johnson of Lyman.
