Having completed their associate degrees studies at Dakota Wesleyan University, Keena Byrd, Kadoka, and Dylan Moro, Joseph, OR, are already into a one month student nursing practicum at Philip Health Services, Inc.

Byrd, a Kadoka High School graduate, will be continuing her education for a bachelor of science degree in medical surgery to eventually work in a Progressive Care Unit.

West was one of 70 children, with their families, on a CMN goodwill promotional trip to Orlando, FL, and Washington, D.C, during the last half of March. Months before, West had been a patient at the Rapid City Regional Hospital because of a horse accident. All surgery and rehabilitation was done at RCRH.

Over 100 local students, with their classroom teachers, participated in the Philip area Save Our Farm Youth (SOFY) camp on Tuesday, May 12, at the Fine Arts building and outdoors locations.

Each student received a specially decorated t-shirt and were given fudgesickles and juice during a mid-session break.

The event was coordinated by Adele Harty, South Dakota Cooperative Extension educator - livestock, for Haakon and Jackson counties.

Gary Lee Meyer, a 63-year-old man from Pierre, was killed in a one car accident at 6:43 p.m. on May 5.

The 2006 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Meyer was traveling west on South Dakota Highway 34 near mile marker 154, about 13 miles east of the South Dakota Highway 73 intersection. The vehicle drifted off the roadway into the north ditch. Trying to bring the pickup back onto the highway, the driver overcorrected. The pickup then crossed the eastbound lane and traveled into the south ditch, where it then rolled.

Meyer was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.

Invited back by the Philip City Council, Seth Hyberger of the Central South Dakota Enhancement District, collected more detail and direction on projected land use in and around Philip.

As a member CSDED, the city of Philip must follow agreements and resolutions to prepare as best as possible for future expansion. Hyberger is a planner who will create a map of Philip and the close-by county area to show the best possibilities.

The city council presented geographical limitations and political preferences toward this future map, which should be completed within two months.

The Philip Chamber of Commerce has over $12,000 in its accounts, not counting the economic development and Lasting Legacy funds.

The Monday, May 11, meeting concerned the best use of the funds. "Let's use it wisely and try to keep it," said treasurer Matt Reedy, "but it will eventually be gone. Some events won't make money and aren't necessarily meant to. This year is as good of a chance that we have to actually do so," said Reedy.

Chamber members voted that the funds must go to special events such as Festival Days.

The Philip Scotties competed in the Region 6B Golf Tournament held at the Hart Ranch golf course on Monday, April 11. Three Scotties will be going on to compete in the state golf tournament.

"It was a tough course," said coach Doug Hauk. "We left a few strokes out that would have qualified the boys team. Maybe next year."

Philip's Tara Ravellette earned an individual second place with a day's total score of 90 on the 18-hole course. She shot a 46 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine.

The Philip Scotties hosted the Western Great Plains Conference Golf Tournament on Friday, May 8, at the Lake Waggoner Golf Course.

The Philip boys' team won the meet with a total score of 133. Wall took second place with a score of 148. White River claimed the third place spot with 153 and Lyman took fourth with 161. Other schools represented included Bennett County, Jones County, Kadoka and Rapid City Christian.

Tremendous wind took its toll on the scores of inexperienced players not making necessary adjustments in their play.

The Black Hills Track Classic on May 20 in Sturgis was one further step for the Philip Scotties toward preparing for state competition.
