The Philip Lady Scotties competed at the West River Invitational Basketball Tourn-ament hosted by Hot Springs on Thursday and Friday, February 7th and 8th.

In Philip's first game, the Class "B" Scotties came from behind to squeak by the Class "B" Wall Eagles with a 51-49 win.

The Lady Scotties invited the Jones County Coyotes to a basketball game on Tuesday, February 5th. That invitation was to the Coyotes' own defeat.

The Scotties made the first basket. Within seconds the Coyotes made their own to tie the score. This was to be the only close part of the game. The Scotties used the low scoring first quarter to learn the abilities and weaknesses of their opponents. The other quarters were a steady walk-away by Philip. One of the more exciting moments was a successful three pointer launched by Jones County at the halftime buzzer.

The Philip Scotties boys' basketball team traveled to Dupree to challenge the Tigers on Saturday, February 9th. The final score was 43-58 in favor of Dupree.

The Philip Scotties are sending all 14 of their varsity wrestlers on to the Region 4B Tournament.

Philip hosted the District 7B Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 9th. The Scottie team earned 254.5 team points, almost double the points received by the nearest competitor team of Bennett County, which had 129 points. Hill City took third place with 94 points, St. Thomas More claimed 74, Wall had 62, Custer 49.5, and Red Cloud earned 47 points.

In order to advance to the Regions, a wrestler must earn at least fourth place in his weight class.

Bonnie L. Royer, age 74, Wall, SD, died February 6, 2008, at her home in Wall.

Services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the First Lutheran Church in Wall, with Pastor Monty Dell officiating.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery of Philip.

Kenard Daniel Fisher, Jr., age 84, Kadoka, SD, died February 7, 2008, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Services were held Tuesday, February 12, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Music was provided by Lyndy Ireland and Joyce Wheeler. Ushers were Tony Gould and Mitch Olney.

Interment with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard was held Tuesday at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

Kenard Daniel Fisher, Jr. was born November 3, 1923, in Washabaugh County, SD, the son of Kenard D. Fisher, Sr.

Haakon School District Super-intendent Keven Morehart was the guest speaker for the Philip Chamber of Commerce during it's meeting on Monday, February 11th.

Morehart gave an overview of current school activities. Parent-teacher conferences will be this Wednesday and Thursday, February 13th and 14th. "Parents of the elementary students always show up," said Morehart. "With the weather and an away girls' basketball game that evening, I hope we can still get many of the high school parents."

Student enrollment is at 277, kindergartners through seniors, down 17 from last year.

Haakon County Deputy Sheriff Foley was one of the National Guard soldiers from Custer's 235th Military Police Company who received mobilization orders Tuesday, June 20, 2006. They were mobilized in October 2006 to train for two to six months at Fort Bliss, TX, prior to deployment to Afghanistan.
