Budget work continued for the Haakon County Commissioners on Thursday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 16, as they pared down the difference between revenue and expenses.

When the commissioners had left Tuesday, September 9, the deficient sat at approximately $240,000, down by $40,000 from when they started earlier in the day. Overall revenue for the general fund and the road and bridge fund is $1,721,405.

Area rodeo athletes faired well at South Dakota Rodeo Association rodeos held over Labor Day weekend.

Results for the final rodeo of the season, the Oelrichs Last Round Up, were not available at press time. The SDRA Finals are slated for September 19 - 21 in Sioux Falls.

The Philip Scotties hosted a triangular volleyball tournament on Thursday, September 11. The Stanley County Buffs and the Lyman Raiders both fell to the Scotties. Stanley County defeated Lyman.

Philip required only three games in each match to earn the best three of five games. In a closer match, the Buffs needed to play five games to defeat the Raiders; 25-19, 15-25, 25-22, 16-25 and 15-12. The fifth game goes to the first team to reach 15, rather than 25.

The Scotties now stand with a season record of 4-1.

The Lady Scotties traveled to Murdo on Tuesday, September 9, to challenge the Jones County Coyotes. The Coyotes improved as the evening progressed, but Philip swept the first three games to take the best three of five. The volleyball match ended 3-0 with game scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-23. Philip's win makes for a current season record of 2-1.

The Philip volleyball team won all four matches during the Philip Tournament on Saturday, September 13. Out of nine teams separated into three pools, the Scotties took first place, while Hot Springs took second, Bennett County took third and Harding County came away with fourth. Other teams competing were St. Thomas More, Jones County, Belle Fourche, Lead and Kadoka. The Lady Scotties' season record is now 8-1.

Over 500 young cowboys and cowgirls from across South Dakota qualified from regional rodeos to compete in the 4-H Rodeo Finals in Ft. Pierre on August 22 through 24.

The top four average placers earned buckles. Below are the Haakon County contestants who placed in the top 10 of the 1st go, the 2nd go and the average in each event at the South Dakota 4-H Rodeo Finals.

Entering all four of Philip's cross country girls in the same race would give them their best ever team performance. Eighth grader Holly Iwan, junior Emily Schofield, sophomore Jennifer Stangle and seventh grader Allison Pekron ran in the junior varsity "A" division race.

After a mad-dash start, Iwan fell into third place out of the 34 runners. Schofield settled into 10th and Stangle into 16th, with Pekron in the back of the pack. By the one mile mark, Iwan had moved into the distant lead with only Chamberlain's Burke in close pursuit.

No rest for the weary, as the Scottie cross country team would compete for the second time in three days, this time at the Kadoka meet on Saturday, September 13.

The Philip girls' varsity runners were Holly Iwan, Emily Schofield and Jennifer Stangle. Iwan again lead her team early on in a battle for fifth place with Todd County's Kylie Willison. Schofield began in 15th place and Stangle in 24th. No other runners were able to challenge Iwan up the long finish hill. She earned sixth place and a time of 18:20, cutting 40 seconds off of her Kadoka course best.

The first Philip home game of the season, as well as the first football game played on the newly resurfaced field, was a 20-32 loss for the Scotties.

The Friday, September 12, game against the Harding County Ranchers began with drizzle during the first half and a wet, slippery field throughout the game. Incomplete passes and fumbles were numerous. The first quarter was tied 8-8 and only the Scotties scored in the second half.

In a home match, the Philip Scottie varsity volleyball team defeated the Kadoka Area Lady Kougars 3-0. The final scores for the contest on Thursday, September 4, were 25-10, 25-8 and 25-9. The season record for the Lady Scotties is now 1-1.
