The Lady Scotties hosted the 2007 Philip Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 8.

Ten teams competed during the 14 hours of matches. The Philip team earned first place, leaving them undefeated, 10-0, so far this season. The Scotties had to get by Bennett County and St. Thomas More, both ranked as "A" schools. Belle Fourche, Hot Springs, Lead/Deadwood and the Pierre JV were also "A" teams attending this tournament.

Lady Scotties chosen to be on the All-Tournament Team were Sierra Hook, Lindsay Mann and Taylor Holman.

The Scotties loaded up for a second race in three days. Strong winds, 58 degree and overcast skies may not seem like ideal conditions, but it proved to be just what the doctor ordered for the Scotties for the Kadoka meet on Saturday, September 8. Again, many personal bests were set and champions were crowned both individually and as a team.

In the varsity boys' race, freshman Zane Pekron, junior Anthony Iwan and freshman Kyle Iwan would compile 38 team points to finish fourth as a team.

Deadwood's Prospector Bowl on Saturday, September 8, saw the Philip football team top the Harding County Ranchers in a close, low-score game. This year's contest again presented cool weather and a soggy field.

The Scottie defense followed through to hold onto a 6-2 win over Harding County in the second game of the 16th annual Prospector Bowl at Ferguson Field on Saturday.

The Scotties used an unusual call late in the game. Philip was ahead 6-0 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter at their own eight-yard line.

The Scotties traveled to Pierre to compete on the Hill View Golf Course on Thursday, September 6. With temperatures in the low 70s, no wind and overcast sky, it would prove to be ideal for many Scottie personal bests.

First the girls' junior varsity ran their 4,000 meter course. Philip's three competitors did not qualify as a team in this high powered "A" division race, but our girls all gave great personal efforts. Seventh grader Holly Iwan battled from the start with Todd County's Kyle Marshall for the number one position.

Racing back-to-back days is not often done, but the Scottie's cross country athletes showed their early season conditioning with many of these runners racing as well or better than the previous day at Winner.

Faith's first race on Saturday, September 1, featured 24 fifth and sixth graders with fifth grader Ben Stangle placing sixth in a time of 6:33 and Allison Pekron placing 13th, covering her mile in 7:52.

The second race combined the boys and girls junior varsity runners. Philip sent two girls and two boys to join the 24 other starters.

The Philip Scotties first cross country race of 2007 came on a windy 95 degree day, Friday, August 31, on the rolling hills of the Winner golf course.

Eleven Philip athletes started in style placing well in the "A" division meet.

The first race was the girls' junior varsity. Freshman Jennifer Stangle, on her third season, was joined by seventh graders Sam Johnson and Holly Iwan. All three girls ran well, with Iwan placing third of 21 runners and clocking 18:44.

"I wish that I could have stayed here," said Haakon County Deputy Sheriff Tom Jeans, "but I knew coming in that the position was a temporary one. I like the people and the area. I like working with Sheriff Larry Hanes and everyone else."

Jeans has accepted a sheriff's deputy position in Walworth County.

The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad (DM&E) announced on September 4th that it has entered into an agreement that will result in a merger of its operations with Canadian Pacific Railway Limited (CP).

The announcement follows DM&E's process to find the best approach to advance the Powder River Basin (PRB) project.

Haakon County Emergency Manager Lola Roseth addressed the Philip City Council during its monthly meeting on September 4.

Roseth updated information on community preparations for any possible pandemic flu outbreak. Also, she is applying for a grant for an area-wide plan in preparation of any hazardous material situation. Roseth reported that the local fire departments, search and rescue and police are in need of upgraded radios. The two emergency shelters in Philip are the basements of the Haakon County Courthouse and the Catholic Church.
