The Scotties hosted the Rapid City Christian Comets on Friday, February 2, in a Western Great Plains boys basketball game. Philip took the win 64-35.

Philip now has a season record of 4-10 overall, and 2-5 in conference play.

The Scottie wrestlers hosted the Philip Quad Wrestling Tournament on Thursday, February 1. The three other teams participating were Custer Wildcats, Pine Ridge Thorpes and Red Cloud Crusaders.

The Philip girls' basketball team traveled to New Underwood on Saturday, February 3, to go up against the Lady Tigers in a Western Great Plains Conference game. The Scotties took the lead and held it for the entire game, coming home with a 43-36 win.

"Philip played real good defense," said New Underwood head coach Dallas Richter. "We had our chances. We just missed too many scoring opportunities, both on the floor and at the line."

New Underwood now stands with a 9-4 season record.

Re-gaining ground to be within only three points of the game-leading Faith Longhorns, the Philip Lady Scotties could not keep up their fourth quarter attack. Giving up two more points before the last buzzer sounded, the Scotties lost the home game on Tuesday, January 30, 46-51.

Esther L. Letellier, age 92, of Norris, died Friday morning, February 2, 2007, at the Bennett County Nursing Home in Martin.

Hearing or saying "I love you" is like the calm before the howling storm. These simple words have been the mystery that has befuddled men and women for centuries. And, that mystery has rarely been completely figured out. Rarely, but on occasion it has.

Young people (like we all once were) either hesitate to say these words, or repeat them offhandedly at almost every conceivable occasion. Men quake at the thought of uttering them to "that special woman". Young girls dream of saying them to "that hot guy" but never actually do.

SIOUX FALLS - Kevin Schieffer, president of Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad, said the Surface Transportation Board's decision to require another environmental impact statement is a hurdle the railroad expects to clear this year.

But a transportation economist, Frank Wilner, said a full-blown EIS could stretch into 2009. "While the (board) said you can go ahead and construct the line, you can't run any coal trains until we complete an EIS.

Philip City Council members made quick work of the Monday, February 5, agenda.

The council approved the final inspection and acceptance of the airport wildlife fence construction. The costs for the last year's improvements to the airport were divided: the federal government paid 95 percent, the State of South Dakota paid two percent, and the City of Philip is responsible for the last three percent.

Haakon County Young Women requested the city's recommendation concerning lighting at the HCYW Kiddie Park.

The South Dakota Office of Economic Development refused the application for a CDBG grant because regulations state that a project connected to a government agency cannot be funded. The rules can be interpreted to allow for re-application if the project were not connected to the courthouse; i.e. if the library was free standing.

"I can't believe it took them this long to tell us we couldn't do it," stated Commissioner Melvin Smith. The commission is unanimously resolved to continue supporting a new library, though it is split on where the location should be.

"It's a family drive in, a family restaurant where we cater to the family atmosphere," said owner and manager Tanya Fillingim, as she points at the high chairs in the corner and pats the shoulders of her own two children.

What used to be BJ's Corner has changed hands and reopened. The building has gotten new carpeting and linoleum, and has seen some cleaning and small repair work, but everything else is basically the same, according to Fillingim.

The interior of the building might look familiar, as does the owner.
