Haakon/Jackson County Livestock Show results

The Haakon/Jackson County Livestock show was held on Saturday, August 4, with 16 youth from the two counties participating. The show began with the sheep, followed by the goat and then finished with the cattle.

Four-person Scramble Golf Tournament

The sixth annual Four-Person Scramble Golf Tournament, sponsored by local Farm Bureau agent, Glenn Parsons, was held Saturday February 4th, at the Lake Waggoner Golf Course.

Fifteen four-person teams from around the area competed in an 18-hole tournament. Farm Bureau sponsored prizes on every hole for men and women. Also, every player had a chance to win $5,000 for a hole-in-one on the par-3 Hole #2.  Nobody succeeded in making a hole in one, but many came close.

City Council's August meeting

Mayor John Hart reported that the sales taxes for the year looked very good, with records up to this last July showing an estimated 20 percent increase over last year's same time period.

Golden West names Reed as new Cable TV Manager

Golden West Telecommunications has selected Rick Reed as the company's new Cable Television Manager following the January, 2007 retirement of Dwight Flatt. Reed will be responsible for the overall operations of the Golden West cable television business which now provides service in 41 communities across South Dakota.

"We are pleased to have someone of Rick's background and expertise join our organization," said George Strandell, General Manager/CEO of Golden West Telecommunications.

Frezil Westerlund pastor for Western New Hope Parish

The new pastor for the Western New Hope Parish is Frezil Westerlund. Her responsibilities include shepherding the congregations of the First Lutheran Church in Philip, the Long Valley Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran in Midland and Deep Creek Lutheran.

Though starting her duties on August 1, she is to be officially installed for the Parish in Midland at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19.

"I really liked the people when I came down here for the interview," said Westerlund. "People are straight forward. Serving in the four churches is going to be an interesting challenge.

Man and mule heading west

Mule ride across three states ... Rod Maday and his mule, Henry, stopped in Philip on their trip from Boy River, MN, to Gillette, WY.

Maday and his mule, Henry, two stopped in Philip early morning on Wednesday, August 1. Maday later cooled off in the Philip community swimming pool as Henry grazed in the shade of nearby trees. They had previously come through Hayes and were to reach Wall by mid-afternoon on Thursday.

They have covered 1,200 miles in 30 days and have already worn out one set of Henry's shoes. "I've done as many as 70 miles in a day, but 16 hours in a saddle is a long day," said Maday.
