James Severin "Jim" Nelson, age 83, of Philip, died Monday, October 15, 2007, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

James Severin Nelson was born May 3, 1924, the son of Nestor and Anna (Hovland) Nelson, at the O.N. Hauge ranch at Powell, South Dakota. He attended grade school at Old Trail School. Jim attended high school at Philip High School, graduated in 1942 as valedictorian of his class and received a scholarship to School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City.

Mackenzie Grace Urdahl, infant daughter of Tamera Neilan and Jason Urdahl, was stillborn on Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, SD.

Mackenzie is survived by her parents; one brother, Tucker James Urdahl, at home in Watertown; her maternal grandparents, Randy and Julie Neilan of Philip; her paternal grandparents, Terry and Marjorie Urdahl of Watertown; her maternal great-grandfather, Max Neilan of Bonesteel; and her paternal great-grandparents, Willis and Joanne Urdahl and Viola Engels, all of Watertown.

William Edward "Bill" Jackson, age 80, of Hot Springs, formerly of Philip, passed from this life on Thursday, October 11, 2007, at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs, following a long illness with Parkinson's disease and pancreatic cancer.

Services were held Monday, October 15, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.

Music was provided by Marianne Frein, organist, and Maureen Palecek, vocalist. Ushers were Gary Block, Mark Coyle and Wayne Nelson.

Marguerite Mary King, age 90, of Murdo, died Tuesday evening at the Maryhouse in Pierre.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, October 12, at the St. Martin Catholic Church in Murdo with Father Timothy Castor as celebrant.

Music was provided by Rose Comp, organist, and Cliff Krogman, guitarist. Usher was Raymond Brink.

Ella M. Hart, age 74, of Philip, died Thursday, October 11, 2007, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, October 16, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant, and Father Tim Hoag as con-celebrant.

Music was provided by Marianne Frein, organist, and Maureen Palecek, vocalist. Lector was Rita O'Connell. Altar servers were Tristen Rush and Kyle Schulz. Ushers were Denny Kennedy and Lloyd Frein.

Margaret L. Barrett, age 94, of Kadoka, formerly of Belvidere, died Thursday morning, October 11, 2007, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 15, at the Belvidere Community Church with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Eulogy was given by Ben Handcock. Music was provided by Syd Iwan, organist. Ushers were Brett and Kade Bonenberger. Pallbearers were Barbara Suess, Pat Barrett, Patsy Handcock, Keith Bonenberger, Raymond Hicks, Bonnie Riggins, Carolyn McGrath and Pam Cokeley.

Interment was in the Belvidere Cemetery.

Lester S. Kjos, 96, Spearfish died peacefully Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at Serenity Corner Assisted Living, surrounded by family.

Visitation was on Monday, October 15, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel. Graveside services followed at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, with Chaplain Charley Conger officiating. Full military honors were provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.

Lester Seldon Kjos was born January 16, 1911, in Brookings County, SD, to Stein and Elise "Lizzy" Kjos.

The football game at Philip on Friday, September 28, was the last regular season home game. It was Parents' Night. It was the Homecoming game. It was also a loss for the Scotties.

The White River Tigers hit the scoreboard first, but were matched by Philip during the first quarter. The rest of the game was theirs, though, with a final score of 8-32.

Philip racked up 28 first downs and five fumble recoveries, but just could not benefit from them to get on the scoreboard.

The Lady Scotties hosted the Dupree Tiger volleyball team on Saturday, September 29. With no lost games, Philip varsity won 3-0; 25-16, 25-13, 25-15. Philip currently has a season record of 18-2.
