Temperatures in the mid-60s, a light breeze and sunny skies made for excellent spectator conditions at the State Cross Country Meet in Huron on Saturday, October 20th.

Previous heavy rains gave the runners the extra little challenge that over 100 competitors alone could not provide.

The Lady Scotties volleyball team hosted the Rapid City Christian Comets on Saturday, October 20th.

Philip won 3-0; 25-8, 25-13, 25-12 for a current season record of 26-3. The Scotties' only losses have been once to Bennett County and twice to Hot Springs.

Serving: Philip - 61 of 72 (18 aces). Leaders: Sierra Hook - 18 of 19 (6 aces), Tylissa Fitch - 13 of 14 (5 aces), Lindsay Mann - 11 of 13 (3 aces).

Receiving: Philip - 23 of 26. Leaders: L. Mann - 5 of 5, Marla Kelly - 4 of 4, Kayla O'Connell - 5 of 6.

Setting: Philip - 57 of 57 (26 assists).

Over 1.9 million trees were planted for conservation purposes across South Dakota during Fiscal Year 2007, according to Resource Conservationist Greg Yapp of the United States Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Huron.

Teresa O'Connell, Haakon County Conservation District manager, said the NRCS's East Central Area consists of 12 counties, including Haakon. In 2007, Haakon County had the most trees planted of its area. There were 34,318 trees planted, or 10.2 miles worth of windbreak trees.

Gregory Blaine Maxon, 52, Rapid City, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, October 22, 2007, after a brief bout with cancer.

Greg was brought into this world on December 16, 1954, in Bismarck, ND. He attended elementary school in Ft. Yates, ND, Pine Ridge, SD, Moorcroft, WY, Springfield, SD, and graduated from high school in Faith, SD in 1973.

He joined the Navy the year he graduated and was later honorably discharged.

Loretta V. Brendlinger, 72, of South Buffalo Twp., PA, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2007, while in the company of family members at Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison Twp., PA.

Loretta was born in Wasta, SD, on July 19, 1935, the daughter of Reinhold and Rose (Helms) Denke.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Freeport and a homemaker. Loretta was a member of the Kittanning VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Altar Guild at her church. She enjoyed quilting, knitting and traveling.

She was the wife of Roy T.

Emilie C. Fugate, 100, died Sunday, October 21, 2007 at Goldenliving Care Center, Bella Vista.

She was born December 15, 1906 in Parkston, SD, to Christoph and Julianna (Koch) Riemann. In 1907, her parents homesteaded 10 miles southeast of Midland, where she grew up and attended rural schools through the 8th grade. She graduated from Midland High School and received her B.S. Degree from Black Hills State University, Spearfish. She also attended University of Wyoming, Laramie.

She began her teaching career in 1927 in a rural school near Midland.

We could have asked for no better day of Wednesday, October 10th, to hold the Regional 5B finals; and no better course, with temperatures in the mid-50s, a sunny sky and a light breeze.

The 15 schools would gather over 80 athletes to compete for a berth at the state cross country meet to be held in Huron on October 20th.

To say that Region 5 has become more competitive would be a drastic understatement.

In his secondary principal's report, Jeff Rieckman stated that the recent parent/teacher conferences had about an 80 percent turnout. "We had lots of parents that we have rarely seen before, their coming to the conferences is a good thing," he said.

When God created man, He decided that man wasn't able to live alone. So, with the man's rib, He created woman as a helpmate.

But have women become more masculine? In recent years, they have moved into the tough, often dangerous jobs as police officers, firefighters, construction workers, soldiers and even presidential candidates. Others have moved into professions once manned by males. How about church pastors?

Who's watching the kids?
