Philip took advantage of five Wall turnovers to shut out the Eagles, 52-0, in the last game of the regular season play on Thursday, October 19.

The win boosted Philip, the third-ranked team in Class 9A, to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in Western Conference play. Wall was pushed back to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in conference games. Philip will move on to a play-off game against Campbell County.

At 6:29 in the first quarter, the Scotties took an early 6-0 lead on a Zane Fees 4-yard run.

Philip's three qualifying varsity boy runners for the State Cross Country Meet in Huron on Saturday, October 21, came in 62nd, 63rd and 101st. Philip's qualifying varsity girl came in 72nd out of a field of 119 runners.

Scottie volleyball at Dupree

On Saturday, September 30, the Philip Scotties traveled to Dupree to defeat the Lady Tigers volleyball team 3-0; 25-9, 25-12, 25-8.

Serving: Philip - 54-55 (15 aces). Leaders: Tylissa Fitch - 12 of 12 (5 aces); Kenzy Pinney - 11 of 11 (4 aces); Taylor Holman - 10 of 10; Lindsay Mann - 6 of 7 (3 aces).

Receiving: Philip - 19 of 22. Leaders: Sarah Foland - 5 of 5, Fitch - 4 of 4; Sierra Slovek - 4 of 4.

Setting: Philip - 57 of 63 (22 assists).

South Dakota voters will have to decide 11 ballot issues November 7 dealing with everything from taxes to gay marriage and whether abortion should be legal.

The last time that many issues filled the state's ballot was 1970 when voters dealt with residency requirements, retired judges, games of chance, four-year terms, the voting age, presidential election, income tax, constitutional revision and school lands.

Eleven issues also appeared on the state ballot in 1910 and 1914. But 11 isn't the record for most state ballot measures.

A majority of voters in each current taxable district needed to give their approval for the plan to proceed. The special election was on Tuesday, October 17.

In Midland, voters cast 131 votes in favor of the plan and 50 against it. There are 271 registered voters in the Haakon County portion of the Midland School District, and 28 registered voters in the Jackson County portion of Midland School District, thus totalling 299. This translates to a 60 percent voter turn-out.

Voters in the Kadoka School District approved the plan 251-58.

Alessia is here as part of a foreign exchange program due to her love of travel and interest in the English language. This 10-month program brought 190 Italian students who arrived in August and will be leaving in June. The group first stopped in New York - touring the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, and Fifth Avenue - before going to meet their host families.

Alessia is hosted by Barry and Edna Knutson and their two girls, Katlin and Kianna.

Back home, she has dad and mom, Danilo and Marv Barabani, and older brother, Andrea.

The Philip Scotties will have four runners at State: Kyle Iwan, Anthony Iwan and Zane Pekron for the boys, and Brandy Bartels representing the girls.

State medals will be given to the top 25 individual places and to the top four teams in each class.

The course distance is 4,000 meters (2.49 miles) for girls and 5,000 meters (3.11 miles) for boys. Starting boxes are drawn by lot. Full teams have a box to themselves. Partial teams will share boxes. The course will be available to runners on Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. CT.

Check-in will start at 9:00 a.m.

The youth run began the day with Holly Iwan as Philip's lone entree. Iwan ran at the front of the 25-runner field through most of the race. With a time of 5:40, she finished second to Kadoka's Shalee Herber. The junior/senior high team looks forward to her officially joining them next year.

The boys' varsity consisted of seventh grader Kelvin Ferguson, eighth grader Zane Pekron, eighth grader Kyle Iwan and tenth grader Anthony Iwan. These Scotties pressed themselves, attempting to push their young team ahead of the Faith, which slipped past them in 2005 by just one point.

Less than a minute after the game's first kick-off, Philip's Casey Cuny ran 50 yards for the first touchdown. The extra point attempt failed.

The kick by the Scotties' Alex Moos flew high and deep into the opponent's territory, but even the underdogs of New Underwood got through the Philip specialty team. New Underwood was finally stopped on their own 29 yard line.

Our community lost a wonderful person, devoted mother, grandmother and friend on Monday morning, October 16, 2006. Dorothy Mae "Pete" Nixon passed away following a courageous battle with cancer. Dorothy was very proud of her community and was committed to serving her family, friends, and neighbors.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 19, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m.
