N. Craig Bearheels, age 45, of Kadoka, died Thursday morning, October 12, 2006, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 14, at the Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Music was provided by Ruth McCubbin, organist, and Susan Davidson, vocalist. Ushers were Brett Amiotte and Cody Young. Pallbearers were Gary Obr, Ric Omasich, Donnie Longbrake, Alan Romero, Tim Romero and Jody Stone.

Interment was in the Kadoka Cemetery.

My mother, proudly 89 years old, just got done putting up her storm windows, preparing her flower bed for winter, and making enough chokecherry jam to last all her relatives until well into next season. My brother, I and our two families sat around her kitchen table. She worried that all that food wouldn't be enough (yeah, maybe for the 165th regiment).

She noticed that Daylight Savings Time will be coming around again on October 29. She said, "I can't keep up with the time."

I used to have to wait for time.

Can you imagine being sued for the decision you reach while serving on jury duty; or while serving on a school board or city council? If Amendment E passes on November 7, it can and will be a reality.

Amendment E is the Judicial Accountability Initiative Law (JAIL) and is the brain child of Ron Branson of North Hollywood, California, a man disgusted with the judicial system after being unsuccessful in numerous attempts to sue judges.

The Sixth Circuit serves Haakon, Jackson, Bennett, Todd, Mellette, Jones, Stanley, Potter, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Lyman, Tripp and Gregory Counties.

Jones County State's Attorney Anita Fuoss of Murdo will challenge incumbent Judge Lori Wilbur of Pierre. Pierre attorney Rose Ann Wendell will challenge incumbent Judge Kathleen Trandahl of Winner.

Fuoss has been an attorney for 20 years.

After high school graduation, they both went on to earn doctorates in education, and both are now retired professors.

Philip Patton, high school class of 1952, was a professor at the Northwestern College at Orange City, Iowa, for over 40 years. He was a professor of accounting and marketing, an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and departmental chairman.

William Patton, class of 1954, was a professor at the University of Montana in Missoula, MT, for over 30 years.

Fifteen South Dakota high school students, including Philip's Bailey Bergeson, met in Oacoma, South Dakota, on Sunday, October 15, as the Youth Advisory Council (YAC). This council helps the Voices for Children identify problems concerning today's younger generation.

The council met to discuss and organize the Kids Speak 2007.

Each member of the YAC had earlier convened a listening session within their community. The members then came together to pool their information to decide what topic was most prominent and how the individuals and the YAC could be most beneficial.

The regularly scheduled Haakon District 27-1 School Board meeting on Monday, October 16, was held at the Milesville Rural Attendance Center.

The board had inspected the currently used school buildings, finishing at the Milesville RAC before their board meeting. The inspection went well. The board then discussed the surplus of the Deep Creek teacherage, though no action was taken.

Luke Weber has been officially approved as the assistant wrestling coach for this season.

Superintendent Keven Morehart stated that the K-6 Title Review was currently underway.

My daughter was not waking up. This is rare, but with me in the household, she knows better. I poked my head into her room (holding desperately to my safety rope) and yelled loud enough to penetrate her covers. "Remember, two wrongs do not make a right, but three lefts do." A few moments later she came out of her room complaining, "Daddy, by the time I figured that out, I was so awake that I couldn't get back to sleep."

That is what a good one-liner is supposed to do - make you think.

Floy May Fugate, age 92, of Rapid City, died Sunday morning, October 8, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a 40-year battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 11, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Music was provided by Jean Weller, organist, with congregational hymns. Ushers were Cliff Parke and Eric Wilmarth.

Two roads open up in my "working" vacations and I take the one less traveled by - which has always made all the difference. I am, you see, a traditionalist when it comes to vacations. I bring a few books I've been meaning to read for years, but, as it turns out, never get time to read them.

I wander into libraries and used book stores … the ones less traveled are more helpful and friendly; but for me, and Philip, the journey remains unfinished.

As a writer, I am against censorship; I want to get people reading - especially the young.
