The City of Philip’s pre-construction meeting on April 11th set the legalities of the Downtown Street Improvement Project. More importantly to the businesses concerned, it set the time and sequence of operations of the construction.

City Engineer Sam Hohn introduced Kevin Roth, also with SPN & Assoc., as the lead resident engineer for this project. The electrical engineer is Sara Honer of West Plains Engineering. The contractors are Hills Material Co.

While many college students enjoyed their week-long spring break, two Philip High School graduates gave their time, sweat and humility to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

The Todd County Invitational track and field event was held in Mission on Thursday, April 6.

In the girls’ division, Philip earned third place with 82 team points. Bennett County took first place with 88, and Winner took second with 84. Chamberlain – 70, Todd County – 65, Kadoka – 59, Rapid City Christian – 53, Little Wound – 23, Marty Indian – 14, White River – 13.

Jodi Williams took first place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.17. Williams also earned first place in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:05.20.

At the Philip Invitational Golf Tournament on Friday, April 7, the more experienced players were able to eventually adapt to the windy conditions that marked the golf season’s opener.

Seven schools were represented in the boys’ division. Philip High School filled two teams. Team A took second place behind Wall. Team B took fifth place behind Lyman and Lemmon. Newell, Bennett County and Bison golfers also competed.

Individually, Philip’s Jordan Smith took fifth place with a score of 87. Allen Hauk earned seventh place with a 91. Devon Ehlers came in 15th with a 103.

The Four Corners’ Wrestling Club has ended another year. Ten wrestlers came to Kirley Hall twice a week to practice with Coach Clay Riggle. The boys ranged from five and a half to 13 years of age.

Parents traveled to the country community hall to discuss the do’s and don’ts of wrestling and get in their winter workout. Families put on some miles, traveling to over 11 different tournaments across South Dakota.

The team members placed as follows: Tyrel Olson, son of Chad and Randi Olson, is a first grader at Cheyenne School. Tyrel is seven and wrestled at 55-60 pounds.

Edmund P. "Ed" Kujawa, age 87, of Kadoka, died Monday, April 10, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka, with Father Brian Sorenson as celebrant.

Music will be provided by JoAnne Stilwell, organist, and Ed’s granddaughters as vocalists: Colette Jones, Stephanie Beynon, Trista Hedderman, Chelsea Kujawa, Britni Rhinehart, Abby Endres, Jodi Leeper and Trina Thorn.

Jessica Ray Grimes, age 17, of Kadoka, died Sunday, April 9, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident, east of Kadoka.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 12, at the Kadoka City Auditorium, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Prelude and postlude music was provided by Jake Elwood, guitarist. Service music was provided by Carl Bauman, Boyd Porch and John Kaiser.

Ushers were Alan Badure, Kenny Fox, John Bauman and Steve Williams.

Pallbearers were Joe Stoddard, Mark Williams, Richard Jobgen, Rodney Sharp, Chris Elwood and Charles VanderMay.

Welcome to golf. Despite the hardships, though, I could maybe learn to like this game, that is if I can first understand it.

The object of the game is to hit a little white ball into a hole that is way over on the horizon. The winner is whoever does so by hitting their ball the fewest number of times.

Don Nelson is filling the position of interim CEO for Philip Health Services until a permanent head administrator can be found. The Rapid City Regional Health Network is currently advertising for applications and holding preliminary interviews for that position. According to Nelson, Philip Health Services will make the final decision in choosing from the top candidates.

Nelson began his interim responsibilities on March 23. “I will probably be here at least 60 to 90 days, but that is hard to pin down,” said Nelson.
