The Scotties hosted the 17th annual Philip High School Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 9.

After a full day of matches, Philip finished in fourth place. Of the ten teams competing, the Bennett County Lady Warriors took first place, while Hot Springs and St. Thomas More took second and third, respectively.

A pool of five teams played against each other in a round-robin competition in one gymnasium, while a pool of the other five teams used the same format in the other gym.

The Philip Scotties hosted the Lyman Raiders and defeated them by a final score of 74-24 on Friday, September 8.

The game ended with about a minute and a half remaining on the "continuous clock" initiated this year as part of the mercy rule.

"We seem to be coming together as a team now," said Head Football Coach Keven Morehart. "We are still experimenting with players to determine the best position for each.

A memorial service was held September 5, 2006 in Omaha, NE, Glen W. Lytle, age 88 years, formerly of Yuma, AZ, presently of Elkhorn, NE, who passed away recently.

He was a World War II veteran, fighting at the Battle of the Bulge. In 1960, he moved to Philip, SD, where Glen and Irish owned and operated the Midway Café until 1965 when they moved to California.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irish M. Lytle; a brother, Boyd, and a sister, Betty Tonsing.

George Jerry Williams passed away August 30, 2006. He was born June 17, 1922.

George grew up on a cattle ranch in rural South Dakota, outside of Rapid City. His father was a rancher in Haakon County for over 60 years. He was born to Katherine and George Williams, the middle child and only son. He had two sisters, Julia and Rose.

After an all night bus ride through a snowstorm, he vowed that he would never live anyplace where it snowed and his family thinks he also developed a lifelong aversion to manual labor.

Robert B. "Bob" Reckling, age 56, of Philip, died Friday afternoon, September 8, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, September 13, at the American Legion Hall in Philip with Pastor Ann Schlossnagle officiating.

Ushers were Brant Sundall, Larry Kochersberger, Pat Seager, Dick Jankord and Marty Hansen.

At Bob's request the body was cremated.

Life is full of soccer, swimming, friends and the fun of growing up for eight-year-old Jacob Bly - a normal youngster who just happens to have Type I diabetes.

Jacob is the son of Paul and Rose Bly of Pierre, formerly of Philip. Paul was the pastor of First Lutheran in Philip for over seven years and now ministers at the Lutheran Memorial church in Pierre.

Jacob's onset of this disease was a major change for him and the family. "We are all just dealing with it. We are glad it is something we can now somehow manage," said Jacob's father, Paul. "It's a day-to-day process.

In its 100-year history, the bank has been one of the most successful in the West River area. With its state charter created on October 30, 1906, the bank started in Midland and was originally named the Bank of Midland.

Luke Weber's hole-in-one elevated the Philip golf team to a third consecutive win over Wall.

It was a wet and rainy Sunday, when Philip and Wall squared off for the third annual Ryder Cup Championship on Sunday, August 27. This year the play was changed to include three different formats - a match play, an alternate shot, and a scramble. The point system was two points for a match play win, four points for an alternate shot and scramble win.  There were a total of 60 points possible. Philip defeated Wall with a final score of 41-19.

The Scotties won their first home game of the season on Friday, September 1, with a score of 53-0. A minute and three seconds remained on the clock.

The new mercy rule was implemented in Philip's first game of the season game by the Scotties against the Jones County Coyotes. A new ruling is the continuous running of the clock in the second half.

According to the South Dakota High School Athletic Association, the mercy rule is "when a team secures a 35 point lead in the second half, the clock will continue to run except for time-outs (team or official) and after a score.
