The Philip Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 3, included 10 teams. After a long day of play, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Philip earned fourth place.

Two pools of competition determined the top four teams. Bennett County taking the championship by defeating Belle Fourche 25-20, 19-25, 21-25. The consolation match determined third place when Lead defeated Philip 18-25, 25-11, 25-18. The two finals matches had Bennett County defeating Philip 28-26, 25-5; and Belle Fourche defeating Lead 25-22, 25-16.

The Philip volleyball team defeated both the Lyman County and the Stanley County teams during the Philip three-way meet on Thursday, September 8.

The Scotties needed to play only four games to win three out of five to triumph over Lyman County – 25-21, 25-22,17-25, 25-23. The Lady Scotties made even quicker work of Stanley County, winning three games in a row – 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.

On Saturday, September 10, the Scotties raced for the second time in three days, this time on the Kadoka Airport.

The meet’s nickname of “Cactus Central” was present in conversations afterward concerning runners having to pull cactus spines out of their shoes during and after the race. This and the weather did not stop the 140 runners from Kadoka and 10 neighboring schools from competing.

Holly Iwan was Philip’s single elementary runner out of 50 in her division’s race.

On Thursday, September 8, the Philip Scottie cross country team raced on the Hillsview Golf Course in the Pierre Invitational Meet.

The flat, winding course was run by 148 athletes representing 15 schools in four divisions. With the temperature in triple digits, and the humidity high with the nearness of the Missouri River, the race proved challenging for the Scotties.

The junior varsity girls, Emily Schofield and Jennifer Stangle, continued marked improvement. The 4,000 meter race ended with Schofield improving by 2:07 with a time of 22:25 and a place-winning 13th spot.

The Jones County/Midland Rebels’ second football game of the season was an admirably close one. On Friday, September 9, they lost to the Faith Longhorns 24-29.

Five minutes into the first quarter, a Longhorn drive was completed for a touchdown when Garret Fordyce ran in the four remaining yards. The extra point attempt failed. With only a minute left in the same quarter, Ryan Palmer ran seven yards to score a Longhorn second touchdown.

In a strictly running offense and an aggressive defense, the Scotties rushed for 48 points and held the Lyman County Raiders to a zero score. The away game on Friday, September 9, ended 48-0 and gave the Scotties their second win in as many games.

This is the first year as head coach for Keven Morehart. Last year he was on staff as a Lyman County Raider. The Philip team is extremely deep in quick and agile offensive runners, thus a passing game is not the main game plan.

The first touchdown was run in by Bo Slovek, and Casey Cuny ran in the two point conversion.

Eileen June Brooks was born in Cottonwood, SD, in 1929. She was the daughter of Roger J. and Rena Peterson.

She married Melvin D. Brooks of Philip, SD, December 27, 1944. Together they had three children, Coleen Calero, of Dana Point, CA, Roxanne Blum, Henderson, NV, and Brian Brooks, of Laguna Niguel, CA., and one granddaughter.

Melvin preceded her in death in 1970.

She was a resident of Palm Springs, CA, for over 30 years.

Darrel Malone, Jr., also known as “Paddy” to his family and friends, passed away recently in a Denver, CO, area nursing home, where he had been a resident for several years.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Sept. 15, at Ft. Logan, CO, with burial in the Ft. Logan cemetery.

Paddy’s father, Darrel Malone, Sr., passed away a few years ago and his mother, “Red” Malone, is residing in a nursing home in Yuma, AZ.

The Malones and Lytles are former Philip residents and owned and operated the Midway Cafe for many yeras.

Paddy graduated from Philip High School.

Joseph James McNeese, 54, Belle Fourche, died Saturday, September 3, 2005, at his home in Belle fourche following a battle with cancer. his wife and children were at his side.

Joe was born May 15, 1951, in Fargo, ND, to Thomas James McNeese and Angela (Cossette) McNeese. Joe grew up mostly in Fargo, graduating from Fargo Shanlee, and he attended NDSU. Working in the construction industry, he married Lori Hess in Lemmon, SD. His work with Tri-State Construction brought them to Belle Fourche. Two sons, Brandon and Quillen were born to this union.

Memorial services for Casper, Wyoming, resident Duane Miechel “Dewey” Orr, 79, will be conducted at a future date by Pastor Steve Chadderdon of Highland Park Community Church. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bustard’s Funeral Home and Crematory.

“Dewey” died on his birthday, August 31, 2005, at Shepard of the Valley Care Center from complications of Alzheimers.

He was born August 31, 1926, in Dixon, South Dakota, to Fred M. and Alice (White) Orr and was raised and attended school in Rapid City, South Dakota.
