Matching seasonal workers, mostly agricultural related, with employers has become not only a business, but a rewarding experience for Trudie Klopper of Philip, SD.

Klopper, a native of South Africa, came to Philip when her husband Dr. Coen Klopper accepted a job at Philip Health Services. The couple and their family had previously been in Canada where her husband had been a physician.

Reading the article in the Rapid City Journal about the Foland/ Game Fish & Parks dispute has just put me over the edge. And so I’m taking advantage of our right to freedom of speech, and appreciate this Letter to the Editor section.

Being a previous resident of Haakon County. I understand the different way of life and mentality that comes with living in a rural setting. I have lived in the “big city” for over 10 years now and feel I have an unique perspective: I know both rural and urban lifestyles.

The Philip Lady Scotties hosted the New Underwood Tigers for a volleyball match on Thursday, October 27. The Scotties won three out of the four games played 25-14, 17-25, 25-12, 25-7.

Serving: 88 of 94 (13 aces). Leaders: Sierra Slovek - 21 of 22, Sierra Hook, 10 of 12 (5 aces), Taylor Holman - 13 of 13 (3 aces), Sarah Foland - 14 of 15 (2 aces).

Receiving: 40 of 55. Leaders: Sarah Albrecht - 16 of 20, Sarah Foland - 8 of 8.

Setting: 101 of 102 (28 assists). Leader: Taylor Holman - 98 of 98 (28 assists).

Hitting: 115 of 128 (36 kills).

The Philip Scotties defeated Warner on Tuesday, October 25, in front of a large home-field crowd. The first round of the Class 9A Region 4 ended with a score of 45-0.

Philip’s quarterback, Dana Kerns, rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another in the Scotties' many charges downfield.

"It was a total team effort. We came out with a lot of intensity," said Philip head coach Keven Morehart. "I thought our defense played extremely tough for us.

In double overtime, the projected underdogs of the Jones County/Midland Rebels upset the Harding County Ranchers and will go on to semi-final play.

The Monday, October 31, game held in Buffalo went into overtime tied eight to eight. Overtime scoring raised that to 22-16.

The Rebels held their own through almost two-thirds of the first quarter. Rancher Cody Sarsland caught a pass from Charlie Nelson for a 23 yard touchdown.

The Jones County/Midland football players defeated the Lower Brule Sioux by one touchdown 26-20. The Tuesday, October 25, win allows the Rebels to continue their playoff bid toward state championship.

The game began quickly in the Rebels’ favor. Within the first four minutes of play, JC/M had reached the one yard line. Henry Ireland completed the charge, and Kevin Ball passed to Andrew Bork for the conversion. The Rebels took the lead 8-0. With three and a half minutes left in the first quarter, the Rebels were in trouble.

The Monday night, October 31, football game hosted by the Philip Scotties versus the South Central Cougars was tied half way through the fourth quarter. The Scotties then lunged ahead to end the game 44-22.

With a little over three minutes into the game, the Cougars fumbled and the Scotties recovered. Philip earned a first down in two plays, then was the first to get on the scoreboard, when Casey Cuny ran in a 55 yard run at the 7:20 mark. Cuny then ran in the conversion points.

The Cougars came back with a ground-eating charge full of first downs.

Irish Malone Lytle 91, of Yuma, AZ, formerly of Philip died at her home in Yuma after a short illness on October 27, 2005. Irish and her husband, Glen, were former operators of the Midway Café in Philip.

Irish is survived by her husband of 51 years, Glen Lytle; sons and their wives, Jerry and Kay Lyn Sterner, Tucson, AZ, Stephen (Kip) and C.J.

U.S. Army Specialist E-4 Daniel Bartels, age 22, with the 4th Squadron, 14th Calvary Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team of Fort Wainwright, Fairbanks Alaska died Tuesday, October 18, 2005, in Mosul, Iraq.

His funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. (CT) Thursday, Oct. 27, at Riverview United Methodist Church with Rev. Iva Laudermith and Rev. Mark Sargent officiating.

Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery at Huron with military rites.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kuhler Funeral Home.
