Philip High School hosted two events simultaneously on Thursday, September 22. The West River Classic and the Three Rivers Conference Championship cross country meets drew 16 schools and 117 runners to the Lake Waggoner Golf Course.

With the home course advantage, Scottie runners improved season and personal bests. The boys’ varsity team placed fourth in the Classic and third in the Conference.

The lady Scotties volleyball team faced the Harding County Ranchers at Buffalo on Friday, September 23. They played four games to determine the match which went to the Ranchers – 20-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-25.

The Philip Lady Scotties traveled to the Belle Fourche Tournament on Saturday, September 24, to come within two points of defeating Lead in the semi-finals.

Defense did not fare well for the Philip Scottie football players during their fourth game, and their first loss, of the season. The Harding County Ranchers greatly slowed the Scottie offense and ran over the defense to win the Friday, September 23, game 8-16.

Philip allowed Harding County to get within four yards of the goal line. The Ranchers took advantage of the position to run in the game’s first touchdown. The two point conversion was successful.

Philip allowed a 34 yard run that gave the Ranchers another touchdown.

The football game at Kadoka on Friday, September 23, was a display of the Jones County/Midland Rebels defense, as well as of the offense. The Rebels won handily 34-0.

Only 20 seconds into the first quarter, the Rebels recovered a fumble during Kadoka’s first offensive play. The Rebels then advanced down field, until, at the 8:42 mark, Kevin Ball ran the ball in the single yard remaining to score the first touchdown. Henry Ireland made the two point conversion run. Again getting control of the ball soon afterward, the Rebels made their second touchdown when Ireland made a 40 yard run.

Joe Price, 82-year-old rancher, bachelor, and lifelong resident of northwestern Haakon County, died peacefully Friday, September 23, 2005, at the Philip, SD, Nursing Home with his sister, Lois (Price) Shearn, at his side.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 27, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with Father Ron Garry officiating.

Music was provided by JoAnne Stilwell, organist, and Joe and Kathy Gittings, vocalists. Lector was Rita O’Connell. Altar server was Jennifer Stangle. Ushers were Mickey Daly and Richard Foley.

Cecilia A. McRae, age 92, of Kadoka, died Wednesday, September 21, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, September 24, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, with Father Brian Sorensen as celebrant.

Music was provided by JoAnne Stilwell, organist, and Tim Polzin, vocalist. Lectors were Jane and Gerry Oligmueller. Speaker was Scott McRae. Ushers were Jim Berry and Chuck VanderMay. Pallbearers were Tom and Scott Kelley, Todd, Brian and Scott McRae, and Ken Ziegler.

Interment was in the Kadoka Cemetery.

Plans are being made for a new building to house the Haakon County Public Library.

The Haakon County Public Library Board and Friends of the Library have been busy the last few months implementing the plans for a new library building.

Plans call for the library to be located on the south side of the Haakon County Courthouse.

Having been a Marine for a little over three years, and having already served in Iraq, Marshall Bowen has been assigned back to Iraq. But, Bowen will not be returning to Iraq as a rifleman, “a basic grunt in the Marine Corps,” but as a Corporal in the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Scout Sniper Platoon.

Bowen, son of Ky and Barb Bowen of Philip, originally joined the military because, “I wanted to see something different, to see what else is out there.” While in the Marines, he has seen areas of Africa and Europe, especially Spain.

The Philip Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 3, included 10 teams. After a long day of play, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Philip earned fourth place.

Two pools of competition determined the top four teams. Bennett County taking the championship by defeating Belle Fourche 25-20, 19-25, 21-25. The consolation match determined third place when Lead defeated Philip 18-25, 25-11, 25-18. The two finals matches had Bennett County defeating Philip 28-26, 25-5; and Belle Fourche defeating Lead 25-22, 25-16.
