KSFY, the local Woonsocket, South Dakota, ABC affiliate, has selected four families from four different towns to be candidates for their $10,000 Extreme Home Makeover promotion.

One of the families selected is the Bill and Naomi Terkildsen family of Woonsocket. Bill Terkildsen is the son of Frances Terkildsen of Kadoka and Naomi is the daughter of Lee and Roberta Vaughan of Philip.

They know what it means to go without. When Naomi was only 17, she had Ashlynne, who was born without a left hand. Ashlynne has been through many surgeries and now has a prosthetic arm.

Linda and Ted Schuller, a mother and son team, have opened a new business in downtown Philip. Appliances and More offers a variety of smaller items, larger appliances, and an appliance maintenance service.

The grand opening was October 10, but merchandise offerings and services are already expanding.

Ted, the appliance part of the team, is currently working out of Rapid City as a serviceman for commercial laundry equipment. In his opinion, 11 years of repair experience is not enough.

Though they took over the business on September 1, they wanted it going by Midland’s Free Day on September 12. They made it!

J&T’s Bar and Grill has replaced the former Tin Buck 2 in downtown Midland.

“Business has doubled since when I was working there before the sale and now,” said Tammy Williams, the “T” part of J&T. She had worked there for the eight months before the previous owner decided to close, after running it for just a year.

The Haakon County School Board 27-1 meeting on Monday, October 17, was held at the Milesville School.

Roger Porch was the first guest speaker, who reported on the progress of the state committee that will eventually make recommendations to the State Department of Education on school funding. The committee meetings are open to the public, though not to open or audience testimony.

Porch summarized the consideration of sparsity – comparing the average daily membership (number of students) with the square mile area covered by the school district.

Calls to the Midland Fire Department started coming in around 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15.

Marty Hansen, fire chief of the Philip Volunteer Fire Department, had seen two puffs of black smoke east from where he was. His cell phone call had Roger Williams, Cody Gartner and other Philip fire fighters heading out before other calls reached Philip.

In Midland, Bridget Schofield had answered the fire phone and set off the fire whistle.

Lois J. Prokop, age 90, of Kadoka, died Thursday, October 13, 2005, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 17, at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka with Pastor Ann Schlossnagle officiating.

Music was provided by JoAnne Stilwell, organist, with congregational hymns. Readers were Rose Gil and Sheri Webster and a poem by her nephew, Orville Balzer. Register book attendants were Sheri Webster, Tammy Ann Prokop and Gailya Logan. Ushers were Thad Stout and Claude Allen Berry.

Richard D. "Dick" White, age 70, of Interior, SD, died Sunday evening, October 9, 2005 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Interior School Gym, with Pastor Mark Ford officiating.

Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 on Wednesday, Oct. 12, all at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.

Music for the service will be provided by Valerie Guptill, pianist, and Alice Richter, Alma Crosbie and Lorraine Fauske, vocalists.

William (Bill) Veryl Haynes, 86, of Meadow, South Dakota, died on October 3, 2005, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the Legion Hall on Thursday.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 6, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.

Music was provided by the Seim Family. Ushers were Gerry Rislov, Kyle Harris, Don Ravellette and Rusty Foster.

The Lady Scotties won hard-fought games to finally win the match against the Longhorns at Faith on Tuesday, September 20.

Though only four games had to be played to determine the best three out of five, two of the games went into extra time. A win of 25 must still be two points ahead of the opponent’s score or the game continues until a two-point lead is achieved. The final scores were 25-21, 31-29, 25-27, 25-19.

Serving: 96-105 (9 aces). Leaders: Sierra Slovek - 24 of 24 (1 ace), Jodi Williams - 19 of 19 (3 aces), Jamie Nickelson - 13 of 14 (0 aces).

Receiving: 61-83.

Three meets in five days brought out good performances from the Philip Scotties’ cross country runners at the White River meet on Monday, September 12. All four athletes who ran on this course last year bettered their previous times.

Holly Iwan, the Philip contestant in the elementary division, gave her best performance of this season with a time of 6:45 and a third place out of 33 girls.

Emily Schofield and Jennifer Stangle ran well in the girls junior varsity race. Schofield clocked a 19:48 time on this flat course; easily her best time so far for the 2005 season.
